Bayer Leverkusen opened the 2020/21 Bundesliga season with the goalless draw vs Wolfsburg but even better Leipzig team will wait for them in the second round match at the BayArena on Saturday.
Leverkusen was enjoying more possession but failed to capitalize on several occasions. Florian Wirtz had the game's first big chance as he broke into the Wolfsburg box, but debutant Maxence Lacroix made a superb challenge to block his shot. John Brooks and last season's top scorer for the Wolves, Wout Weghorst, had two great chances for the hosts but the man of the match but Lukas Hradecky was ready to make crucial saves. Leverkusen grew into the game with youngster Wirtz working hard and covering more ground in Kai Havertz's place and role from the last season and after his blocked effort Moussia Diaby forced a save from Koen Casteels. Wirtz overtook Havertz as Leverkusen's youngest ever debutant and scorer last term. He made his debut two weeks past his 17th birthday and scored his first goal - against Manuel Neuer no less - at the age of 17 years, one month and four days old. New signing Patrik Schick came on after the hour mark and had a chance to win the game in the final minutes but couldn't keep a header on target from Amiri's free-kick.
Schick will face former teammates if given the chance after he joined Leverkusen on a permanent deal from Roma in the summer, having spent the second half of the previous campaign on loan at Leipzig. The Czech international scored 10 times in the Bundesliga, including an effort against his new employers in March. Schick was Leipzig’s next-best scorer after Werner last season. Coach Peter Bosz must decide between him and Argentina international Lucas Alario who didn’t impress in the first match. Leon Bailey is expected to return to contention for the first-team after injury and Germany internationals Nadiem Amiri and Jonathan Tah, along with South American duo Exequiel Palacios and Wendell, will be pushing for minutes from the bench. Brazil U23 international attacker Paulinho remains on the sidelines.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - L. Bender, S. Bender, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Wirtz, Aranguiz (c), Demirbay - Bellarabi, Schick, Diaby
Doubtful: Bailey (fitness)
Out: Paulinho (knee)
Coach: Peter Bosz
Emil Forsberg, Yussuf Poulsen, and Amadou Haidara were all on the scoresheet as RB Leipzig got their 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign off to a winning start at home to Mainz. Leipzig had thrashed Mainz 8-0 and 5-0 last season and Mainz saw a ghost of the past when Dani Olmo was tripped by Leandro Barreiro inside the penalty area, giving Forsberg a chance to convert the penalty. They doubled the lead after Olmo took a free-kick into the box, where Poulsen headed the ball over Robin Zentner. Forsberg was the star of the show but failed to score more on two occasions and then Mainz reduced the gap when Robin Quaison played a through ball perfectly into the path of Jean-Philippe Mateta, who tucked away from the visitors' first attempt on target. Forsberg continued to pull the strings in the midfield and was the creator of the final goal when Haidara put his name on the scorers' list.
A worrying moment for Leipzig came when Olmo took a blow to the head midway through the half, but he left the pitch under his own steam to be replaced by Bundesliga debutant Hee-Chan Hwang as Leipzig stayed in control to collect maximum points. With the absence of Timo Werner - who joined Chelsea on the back of a 28-goal, last season campaign Leipzig acquired the services of Norway international Alexander Sorloth. The 24-year-old scored 33 goals in 49 appearances whilst on loan at Turkey's Trabzonspor last season, and could be ready for the Bundesliga debut. Sorloth top-scored in the Turkish Süper Lig and a domestic cup in 2019/20, with 24 and seven goals respectively. Captain Marcel Sabitzer will miss out again due to a thigh problem, handing US international Tyler Adams another opportunity in central midfield. Influential against Mainz, Forsberg registered a goal and assist in the same league match for the first time since Leipzig’s 4-2 win at Leverkusen in April 2019. Leipzig midfielder Kevin Kampl registered six goals and nine assists in 73 games for Leverkusen between December 2015 and August 2017.
Leipzig: Gulacsi (c) – Klostermann, Upamecano, Halstenberg – Haidara, Adams, Kampl, Angelino – Olmo, Forsberg – Poulsen
Doubtful: -
Out: Hartmann (knee), Konate (fitness), Laimer (knee), Martinez (unknown), Sabitzer (thigh)
Coach: Julian Nagelsmann

Leipzig looked like a team that follows a momentum after a sensational last season as they took a place in a UEFA Champions League semi-final. The away win is a reasonable bet for this match even though Leverkusen has a strong squad and play at home.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
