Bayer Leverkusen will not have an easy task to win against a resurgent Mainz at the BayArena on Saturday.
Leverkusen has failed to keep a clean sheet since suffering their first league loss of the season against Bayern Munich on Matchday 13, losing five of those eight games and also going out of the DFB Cup to lower-league Rot-Weiss Essen. Fosu-Mensah, who joined from Manchester United, made his first home start in last week’s comprehensive 5-2 win over VfB Stuttgart, which looks to have signaled a change of fortunes.
Kerem Demirbay scored a brace and could keep his place ahead of the returning Nadiem Amiri, while the performance of winger Leon Bailey was just as impressive with a goal and an assist. Bailey registered his sixth assist of the season last time out. Along with his five goals, that makes him Leverkusen's most potent attacker. Teenager Florian Wirtz set a new Bundesliga record, while there was also a debut goal for another arrival from England, Demarai Gray. Patrik Schick is expected to continue ahead of eight-goal top scorer Lucas Alario as Die Werkself target a return to the top four.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - Fosu-Mensah, Tah, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Wirtz, Aranguiz (c), Demirbay - Bailey, Schick, Diaby
Out: Arias (ankle), Baumgartlinger (knee), Bellarabi (thigh), Paulinho (knee), Weiser (thigh)
Doubtful: L. Bender (calf)
Coach: Peter Bosz
Mainz is second from the bottom, but they have earned twice as many points in the Rückrunde (six) as Leverkusen (three). That includes last week’s 1-0 win at home to Union Berlin and a shock 3-2 victory over RB Leipzig. The 05ers had earlier also claimed a point away at Borussia Dortmund under new coach Bo Svensson. The gap to the relative safety of the play-off spot is still four points, with Arminia Bielefeld also having a game in hand, but things are going in the right direction.
With seven-goal Jean-Philippe Mateta leaving on loan to Crystal Palace in the winter transfer window, defender Niakhate is Mainz’s top scorer with three. He has scored three of their four goals from those two recent wins, while club legend Adam Szalai is back in the fold and expected to start again alongside Karim Onisiwo. There’s also added firepower in Robert Glatzel’s return to the Bundesliga on loan from Cardiff City.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Bell, Niakhate - da Costa, Barreiro, Kohr, Mwene - Latza (c) - Szalai, Onisiwo
Out: -
Doubtful: Quaison (knee)
Coach: Bo Svensson

Leverkusen has won each of their last six Bundesliga meetings with Mainz, their best such run against any current top-flight side. The last three have all been 1-0 victories. Mainz have only won once on the road in the Bundesliga this season, drawing two and losing their other six away fixtures. The home team is the favorite for the win, but both teams to score is the most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
