Recent Arsenal defenders Sead Kolasinac and Shkodran Mustafi are running out of time to save Schalke's season, with the Royal Blues' next chance at redemption coming against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. Read our reasons for Leverkusen vs Schalke prediction and betting tips.
Hannes Wolf will take charge of his first Leverkusen game since replacing Peter Bosz last week, the Dutchman's dismissal brought about by Die Werkself's run of just three wins from 14 league fixtures in 2021. Leverkusen lost just one of their first 19 games of this season across all competitions but have since won just four of their last 18 competitive fixtures. That spell has left sixth-placed Bayer teetering on the edge of the European places; seven points adrift of Eintracht Frankfurt in fourth, as well as just two points clear of Union Berlin and the chasing pack. Die Werkself has kept just one clean sheet in their last 18 competitive fixtures.
Interim boss Wolf has been tasked with securing Europa League football at the very least between now and the end of the campaign, and he could hardly have wished for a better opponent first up, with 11 games passing since Schalke chalked up their sole win of the campaign. Demarai Gray should join Leon Bailey on the flanks in the absence of Moussa Diaby, with Florian Wirtz through the middle, while top-scorer Lucas Alario will again battle it out with Patrik Schick to lead the Leverkusen line. Sven Bender is unbeaten in 11 Bundesliga matches this season, while twin brother Lars has lost just one of his 13 outings.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - Frimpong, Tah, Tapsoba, Wendell - S. Bender - Gray, Wirtz, Demirbay, Bailey - Schick
Out: Arias (ankle), Baumgartlinger (knee), L. Bender (knee), Fosu-Mensah (knee)
Doubtful: Diaby (not included), Sinkgraven (thigh)
Coach: Hannes Wolf
In the visitors' dugout, Dimitrios Grammozis will be hoping his side can score for the first time in his tenure as Schalke slips closer to relegation with each passing week. They've scored just twice in their last nine matches, while conceding 25, and are in desperate need of inspiration. The Royal Blues will be hoping Klaas-Jan Huntelaar can provide some of that having managed 14 minutes of the 3-0 defeat at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach and the 37-year-old will have benefitted by extra time on the training ground over the international break.
He may still only manage a place on the bench, however, with USA youngster Matthew Hoppe starting up-front. Amine Harit was only named among the subs against Gladbach but could return in place of William, while there is a possibility that Grammozis moves to a back-four with captain Sead Kolasinac anchoring the midfield as the Greek coach looks for a dramatic turnaround in the club's fortunes. Interim Leverkusen head coach Wolf suffered defeat in both of his previous meetings with Schalke.
Schalke: Rönnow - Becker, Mustafi, Thiaw, Oczipka - Mascarell, Kolasinac (c) - Raman, Serdar, Harit - Hoppe
Out: Bentaleb (groin), Boujellab (ankle), Ludewig (foot), Mendyl (ankle), Nastasic (calf), Skrzybski (knee)
Doubtful: Paciencia (knee), Sane (knee)
Coach: Dimitrios Grammozis

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
