Bayer Leverkusen will have another stern test against the in-form VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
Leverkusen's start to 2021 went from bad to worse in midweek with Peter Bosz's side knocked out of the DFB Cup at the last 16 stage by fourth-tier Rot-Weiss Essen after extra-time. Having started the season on fire, Die Werkself have struggled since the turn of the year and in facing Stuttgart, will not find an easy route to what would be three confidence-boosting points. Since coming on for Lars Bender at half-time in his side's defeat to Wolfsburg on Matchday 18, Tim Fosu-Mensah has played every minute for Leverkusen.
The January acquisition from Manchester United does have further competition for his place with Jeremie Frimpong, signed from Celtic, also making his Bayer debut in the Cup. Kerem Demirbay is set to continue in midfield with Nadiem Amiri sidelined. Patrik Schick and Lucas Alario started up front together on Tuesday but there will likely only be room for one come Saturday. Bayer has only won one of their last four home games in the league. That said, they've lost just one of their last 17 Bundesliga meetings with Stuttgart (W12, D4).
Leverkusen: Hradecky - Fosu-Mensah, Tah, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Wirtz, Aranguiz (c), Demirbay - Bailey, Schick, Diaby
Out: Arias (ankle), Baumgartlinger (knee), Bellarabi (thigh), Paulinho (knee), Weiser (thigh)
Doubtful: Amiri (not included), L. Bender (calf)
Coach: Peter Bosz
Stuttgart did what Leverkusen Leverkusen couldn't last weekend: return to winning ways. Their 2-0 win over Mainz last Friday was sealed by a Goal of the Season contender from Silas Wamangituka, who carried the ball from the edge of his box into Mainz's penalty area before burying his 11th goal of the campaign. Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo must manage without club captain Gonzalo Castro, though, after the midfielder's 400th Bundesliga appearance was cut short by a hamstring injury. Philipp Förster, Daniel Didavi, and Mateo Klimowicz are pushing for his spot in the final third.
Silas is the highest-scoring midfielder in the 2020/21 Bundesliga. The last Stuttgart player to hit 11 goals at this stage of a season was club legend, and striker, Fredi Bobic (1996/97). Pellegrino Matarazzo suffered his first defeat as Stuttgart coach at the hands of Leverkusen, in the 2019/20 DFB Cup quarter-finals. The American's overall record at the VfB helm is W16, D10, L12.
Stuttgart: Kobel - Mavropanos, Anton, Kempf (c) - Silas, Mangala, Endo, Sosa - Förster, Gonzalez - Kalajdzic
Out: Al Ghaddioui (pelvis), Castro (hamstring) Egloff (ankle), Mola (hip)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Pellegrino Matarazzo

Stuttgart is the second-best away team in this season's Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich. VfB has taken 17 points from a possible 25 on their travels. Both teams to score is the most reasonable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
