The new 2020/21 Ligue 1 season starts this weekend, with Lille welcoming Rennes in the derby match at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Saturday.
The first round of the matches in Ligue 1 is more exciting just because of the meeting of the two teams that had similar results in the last season. Rennes finished third the last term with 50 points, while Lille finished fourth with the point less than their next rival. Lille will be looking to give fans some reasons to be happy after they missed out on a place in the Champions League. They have big ambitions for the new season and their job in the transfer period suggests that Lille will try to be even better.
They had trouble scoring with just 35 goals in 28 matches and they brought in for 32 million euros from Genk Canadian forward Jonathan David who has got 18 goals in 27 matches. He will try to replace Victor Osimhen who waits to sign a big contract with Seria A side Napoli and who scored 13 goals in last season as the best striker in the team. They also brought in experienced Burak Yilmaz from Besiktas who will help in matches where rivals defense must be attacked with long balls and aerial duels.
They also got great potential, big defender Sven Botman from Ajax, and very talented Manchester United player Alfred Gomez on loan. They were in decent form before the previous campaign was put on hold, winning six of their final seven league games before the shutdown, with the last three wins in a row. That spell was even longer because Lille won ten of their last 14 league games – that was a run that lifted the club from tenth to fourth between November and March.
They've got a great defensive record, they didn't concede in the last three games and only three teams kept net better in the last term, but also they were the lowest scorers in the top five teams. Lille will be hoping that Timothy Weah has recovered from a hamstring injury sustained at the end of last season because his flair and pace are more than enough to help the team in the final third.
Lille (4-2-3-1): Maignan – Bradaric, Botman, Fonte, Celik - Sanches, Andre - Bamba, David, Ikone - Yilmaz
Coach: Christophe Galtier
Rennes was more than a surprise in the last season and their great campaign give them third place and a ticket to the Champions League. Ambitions are even higher because they had a good transfer period and they feel that place among elite football clubs for the first time in their history can give them an extra edge to the rivals in Ligue 1.
Julien Stephan’s team is not the most attractive in the attack but it is good to notice that only Reims had a better defensive record last season. Rennes signed Martin Terrier from Lyon for 12 million euros and he could be a player able to connect midfield with the striker because he posses creativity but also can be dangerous from the distance. They also signed Steven N'Zonzi from Roma for his skill set that can help develop youngster Camavinga who played very well in the last season although he was an only 16-yr old boy among senior players. Lille signed good defender Aguerd from Dijon and he will instantly fill the starting spot in the last line. One of the names worth keeping an eye on is M’Baye Niang. The 25-year-old Senegalese forward contributed 10 goals to his team last season. There are several reasons to believe that Rennes has great potential in this team and very big roster so coach Julien Stephan could easily rotate the squad through the season. They also don't have any injury concerns.
Rennes (4-3-3): Salin - Boey, Aguerd, Silva, Maouassa - N’Zonzi, Bourigeaud, Martin - Raphinha, Niang, Terrier
Coach: Julien Stéphan

It is difficult to predict this game because both teams have confidence and also ambitions to succeed in the new campaign. These are teams that play with a similar style, with pacey wing players and big strikers in the middle of the penalty box so stamina and fatigue of any defense could lead to some errors that will decide this match. The final bet can be over 2,5 goals because the defense should be put on the big pressure from the start.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
