Lincoln host Sunderland at the LNER Stadium (Lincoln) in the first leg of the League One Play-Offs Semi-finals and the match kicks off at 6 pm (UK) on Wednesday, May 19. Read our reasons for Lincoln vs Sunderland prediction and betting tips.
Lincoln hardly prepared for the playoffs in ideal circumstances having failed to win any of their previous three League One matches, which resulted in a fifth-placed finish. The Imps were thumped 4-0 by Sunderland meeting back in December and will be desperately looking to end their six-game wait for a home victory having finished the season in wretched form at Cincil Bank. Meanwhile, Sunderland's season hardly ended any better, with their top-two hopes going up in flames following a seven-match winless run in April. The Black Cats are unbeaten in two but must perform far better over the two legs to avoid a fourth consecutive year at League One level.
Lincoln City were held to a 0-0 draw by Wimbledon in their final regular season fixture. Brennan Johnson missed their two best chances in a largely uneventful encounter. The Imps only just made the playoffs as they ended the season with just one win from their final five fixtures. They finished fifth on the table, three points above Charlton Athletic, who were just outside the top six. Imps are also unconvincing at home with one win from their last six matches.
Michael Appleton’s men have also conceded six goals in their last three matches. The group now face the biggest question of all – do they have what it takes to finally defeat Sunderland? They’ve met three times this season, lost 4-0 in a game they should have led 2-0 after ten minutes, then battled to a pair of 1-1 draws at the Stadium of Light. Some think the play-offs offer a chance for a tactical approach, maybe get ahead and defend a lead or with Imps’ away form, hold them at LNER Stadium and look to make it third time lucky in the north east.
As for Sunderland, The Black Cats made the playoffs after finishing fourth on the table, level on 77 points with Lincoln. They came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Northampton Town in their final regular season fixture with Carl Winchester getting the equaliser. Like Lincoln, Sunderland did not have the best end to the regular season with just one win from their final five fixtures, although three of those matches ended in draws.
The Wearsiders' 14-game unbeaten run propelled them into contention for the League One title, but they'd void of ideas as their unbeaten run came to an end and went on a seven-game winless run. Johnson's side had done just about enough to secure their playoff berth but needed a win from one of their final two fixtures to avoid a nervy end to the season. They comfortably dispatched Plymouth in the penultimate fixture of the season, but a draw in the dead rubber finale against Northampton prompted fears in the Black Cats fanbase.

Lincoln meet Sunderland having not won in all three meetings with Lincoln in 2020/21, losing and drawing in League One and drawing 1-1 in a Football League Trophy semi-final match before going out 5-3 on penalties. Moreover, in their League One meeting at Sincil Bank earlier in December, Sunderland ran out 4-0 winners, their biggest away league win of the season while also Lincoln’s heaviest home league defeat of the season.
Another draw is a likely outcome as most pundits agree. We expect a cautious approach from both sides and the low-scoring affair.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
