Liverpool host Ajax at Anfield in the 5th round of the Champions League group D and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Tuesday, December 1.
LIVERPOOL VS AJAX MATCH ANALYSIS
Liverpool started their 2020/21 Champions League campaign with three wins - a hard-fought away win at Amsterdam against Ajax in the first round (0-1), a 2-0 home win against Danish Champions League debutants, Midtjylland, and a convincing 5-0 in Bergamo. They now top their group with 9 points after the home defeat to the Italian side (0-2) in the reverse fixture last Tuesday but are still two points clear of both Ajax and Atalanta. As for Ajax, after losing to the Reds at home in their group opener, they drew against Atalanta away from home (2-2) and won the next two back-to-back games against Midtjylland with an aggregate score of 5-2. They are now 2nd in the standings, above Atalanta on goal difference, and the next two matches will decide who progresses into the knockout stage.
Group D of the Champions League has been blown wide open following the Reds’ shocking defeat to Atalanta last Wednesday. Klopp’s men went into the game with the chance to seal qualification to the next stage but, they ended up losing 2-0 to their Italian opponents. This was one of the worst performances by Liverpool in recent years and Jurgen Klopp cannot be absolved from blame. Although they have been hit by injuries to key players, especially in defense, the Anfield team has demonstrated that they can be unstoppable with or without their injured stars.
Atalanta scored twice in four minutes to deliver a surprise victory over Liverpool as the much-changed Reds side lacked fluidity and failed to have a shot on target and lost a competitive home match by a margin of more than one goal for the first time in 137 matches under Jurgen Klopp. Klopp's side still remains top of the group and need one win from their final two games - at home to Ajax and away to Midtjylland - to qualify.
Ajax, on the other hand, were the favorites heading into their tie against Midtjylland last Wednesday, with a victory keeping them very much in the mix for qualification to the knockout stages. As it turned out, they are now also in the mix to win the whole group. They displayed a professional performance that dealt with the Midtjylland threat, for the most part, both on and off the ball.
Ajax’s attacking play was very intense and promising, and their ability to dictate the tempo of the game, even with the pressure of the Danish side shows the quality in this Ajax team.
Ajax come into this encounter following a 5-0 thrashing of Heracles in the Eredivisie on Sunday, their 9th win in 10 matches in Dutch top-flight, and will look to upset the wounded Liverpool side as Ajax haven’t lost any of their last five away games against English sides in the Champions League (W1 D4).
