LIVERPOOL VS MAN CITY MATCH ANALYSIS
After they had left their dry spell (D3, L2) behind them with two 3-1 away wins on the trot – against Tottenham and West Ham, the defending champions, Liverpool suffered another shocking Anfield defeat against Brighton (1-0) on Wednesday night. As the result, they slipped into 4th, four points behind Man Utd in 2nd and seven points from leaders Man City, who have a game in hand. As for leaders, Man City, their most recent matches saw them reach the finals of the League Cup, progress to the Round 5 of the FA Cup and win nine consecutive league matches, conceding only once and netting 21 goals in the process. They have overtaken their local rivals Man Utd at the top, and, with a game in hand, could even widen the gap between them and the chasing pack.
Liverpool have been in a poor run of form since the start of the year and have not scored a single goal in the Premier League in four matches, prior to the match with Spurs. It must be noted that the defending Champions have rarely looked so vulnerable in recent years. The Reds, however, remain in the top-four after two wins on the road against the two top-six teams, but the second Anfield defeat in two weeks has left them with almost no chance of catching up with Man City unless they win on Sunday.
Liverpool went nearly four years of top-flight action unbeaten at Anfield, but have now lost consecutive PL games here for the first time since September 2012. The ‘Reds’ suddenly look beatable at their fortress. Liverpool added more urgency to their game in a bid to find a leveler after Alzate put the Seagulls ahead with his first Premier League goal, but in a game of few chances, it was still the visitors who created the better of them.
Man City, on the other hand, are back on winning ways - it was after their impressive victory at Chelsea on 3 January that Pep Guardiola declared this. Little more than a month since has reinforced that view, with Man City winning their last nine Premier League matches to tighten their grip on the 1st place ahead of the weekend’s action. Guardiola's men were as low as 15th at one stage in the campaign, yet they suddenly find themselves with the title race effectively in their hands.
City have been firing on all cylinders and their impressive title push has had a solid foundation that’s witnessed City register six straight PL clean sheets and concede a league-low 0.62 goals per match this term. The way City are playing and the run they are on, there aren’t many weaknesses with them at the moment, especially defensively where they have gone up a notch or two, maybe more.

Liverpool have a superior overall record against City with 11 wins to Citizens’ 6 in their last 20 meetings. The Reds are also unbeaten in their last 17 home league matches with City, last suffering defeat at Anfield to the Citizens in 2013.
City won't get a better chance to undo that record than now, given Liverpool's current woes. If Liverpool can win at Anfield, it gives them hope and a chance of staying in the title hunt. If they don't, then it's going to be almost impossible for them to catch City, and we are not sure anyone else can either.
