Liverpool host Real Madrid at Anfield (Liverpool) in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Wednesday, April 14. Read our reasons for Liverpool vs Real Madrid prediction and betting tips.
Real exposed Liverpool’s defensive frailties in Madrid, with Ozan Kabak, Nat Phillips and Trent Alexander-Arnold all at sea during a 3-1 loss. The Reds finished the first leg strongly, though, and can draw on the experience of plenty of past Anfield fightbacks for encouragement ahead of the return fixture. Jurgen Klopp admitted a lack of atmosphere won’t help this time but with this game following a crucial Real’s El Clasico clash against Barcelona, the Reds can still make it interesting.
Except for two spells after half-time and at the finish in the away leg, when their opponents were holding on to what they had, Liverpool were overpowered by Real Madrid, whose only disappointment might be missing out on a clearer margin ahead of the return in eight days’ tie. An away goal is certainly a significant consolation for Liverpool to take into the second leg at Anfield on Wednesday night, but without fans and with a miserable recent record at home, the Reds will hope to avoid scraping into the Premier League’s top four becoming their only goal.
Still, Liverpool’s performances have been better than the results suggest, especially after the return of Diogo Jota has boosted their attacking threat. However, their well-documented injury problems in defence remain an issue. Jurgen Klopp’s team famously came from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona in the semi-final on their way to winning a sixth European Cup two years ago and the task in the last-eight second leg at home is likely to be just as difficult. With no fans inside Anfield to produce that special European atmosphere, even an away goal may not be of much help.
As for Real Madrid, they were missing both first-choice centre-backs in Sergio Ramos, out injured, and Raphael Varane, who returned a positive Covid-19 test on the day of the game, but that barely mattered as Liverpool were so poor they were not tested. Real never allowed Liverpool to settle into a rhythm with Vinicius’ pace causing constant problems. Real were making their first quarter-final appearance in three seasons but resembled the club which has lifted this trophy a record 13 times in the opening encounter.
Real are far from infallible, though, losing to the likes of Cadiz, Alaves, and Levante in La Liga this season, as well as going down twice to Shakhtar in the group stage of this competition. Add on the fact these matches come either side of a crucial El Clasico clash with Barcelona and their progress is no foregone conclusion. Nevertheless, 3-1 in the first leg was a huge effort against six-time European Champions and Zinedine Zidane should be happy with what his side had done, taking a two-goal lead to Anfield.

Liverpool meet Real Madrid having previously lost each of their last four games against the Whites in the UEFA Champions League, including the first leg of this tie. However, in their only previous two-legged knockout European tie, Liverpool won 5-0 on aggregate against Real Madrid in the last 16 of the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League, which is Madrid's biggest ever aggregate defeat in a knockout tie in the competition.
Liverpool’s defensive frailties were cruelly exposed in Spain but we feel this Champions League quarter-final tie is far from over as the Reds can draw on the experience of plenty of past Anfield fightbacks for encouragement.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
