Ligue 1 Sunday's game between Lorient and Strasbourg at Stade du Moustoir could be decided by one goal.
Lorient won the French second division championship season 2019/20 and with that also the right to play in Ligue 1. They won 54 points after 28 rounds and got lucky to have a point ahead of the team behind them at the table. Lorient celebrated promotion back although they lost four of their last five league matches so they were more than serious in preparation for the new season. They were unbeaten in all five pre-season friendlies.
Quality of the Lorient and the inexperience of the squad could be a difficult challenge from a promoted team and that could lead to a very cautious approach in first games. Lorient was happy to announce the contract extension with Yoane Wissa (23 years old), their best goalscorer in the last season with 15 goals after the renewal of very influential Enzo Le Fée and Laurent Abergel, so they will try to develop their players and push them to another level. They signed Adrian Grbic, who scored 17 goals for Clermont in Ligue 2 last term and will be eager to impress on his Ligue 1 debut but he is doubtful for the next match.
Lorient gained promotion thanks to well-organized defense but they know they need more weapons in attack so the preseason games were great for them to gain confidence and try more new options in the final third. Apart from Grbic FC Lorient boss Christophe Pélissier will be thankful to have injury-free squad available to choose from.
Strasbourg played quite good in the last season and they were on 11th place in the standings with 38 points after 27 games, 3 points behind the top five teams. Strasbourg isn’t among the best teams in the country but they always find a way to be in the middle of the table and to play solid football and satisfy fans in recent years. Few teams want to play against them, because they are always tough to crack and their abilities and performances are established among Ligue 1 spectators.
Coach Thierry Laurey was capable to see that last season wasn’t that good as it should be because the missed several chances to score and to gain more points and even place in Europe. They tried to be ready for the new season but after a great start and two victories over Nimes and Montpellier, they lost to Metz in the last friendly match.
They also had four positives on COVID-19 that disrupted their preparations and their number one goalkeeper Matz Sels will miss several months after he had injury of Achilles tendon as South African striker Lebo Mothiba who had the same injury. Their transfer window was very different than in other clubs because there were no significant arrivals or departures and they have chosen to resign their best players as Waris, Ajorque, and Thomasson. Strasbourg is a team that creates many chances but fails to convert them in goals so their main concern is how to finish better in the penalty box. Their coach is satisfied with how the team stayed focused in recent training sessions despite off-pitch situations and he thinks they are ready for the new season. Strasbourg will miss Sels but they experienced Kavashima or talented Kamara to replace him at goal.

It is easy to predict a very cautious game with hard duels in the middle of the pitch. The great work ethic of both teams and their struggles to score goals could help us to predict something very similar to a goalless draw. Under 2,5 is the preferable bet for this game.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
