Luton host Reading at the Kenilworth Road (Luton) in the 43rd round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Wednesday, April 21. Read our reasons for Luton vs Reading prediction and betting tips.
A minimal derby win against Watford, coupled with Derby County's 2-1 defeat to Blackburn on Friday night was enough to ensure that Luton are now mathematically safe from relegation, which with five games to go is a huge achievement, particularly after Town only avoided the drop on the final day last term. On the other hand, Reading failed to break through a disciplined Cardiff defence until the third minute of injury time on Friday night as they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw. The Royals have now won just one of their last seven league games and need a victory here to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Luton had substitute James Collins to thank at the weekend as his late penalty helped seal a derby day victory against a promotion-chasing Watford side. The hosts have struggled for consistency this season and have lost two of their last three league games, but it didn’t show against the Hornets who the Hatters last defeated almost 28 years ago. The Town made light of that record and their opponents' lofty position in the table, sitting second and on a run of seven wins from eight prior to the contest, as they completely dominated throughout, and should really have won by more.
After what has been a battling season, beating their local rivals has put the cherry on the cake and it is no surprise that social media was awash with happy Luton fans on Tuesday evening. The win secured Championship football for next season, taking the Hatters onto 56 points, five more than the last term with five matches still to play. Apart from writing themselves into Luton Town folklore with a completely dominant performance against the promotion-chasing Hornets, boss Nathan Jones and the squad also deserve plenty of credit for being in with a genuine shout of a top-half finish.
As for Reading, a leveller in the 94th minute against Cardiff by Yakou Meite earned the Royals what could be a vital point on Friday come the season’s end. However, it’s not in their hands - with four games remaining, other sides have better points tallies than the Royals, so Reading will definitely need some favours. Barnsley remain in pole position to land the fourth and final play-off spot, but their shocking defeat at St Andrew's against Coventry has given Royals fans hope.
Another advantage for Reading is that their goal difference is three better than Barnsley's, so if they were to finish level on points, the Royals would have the edge. The games continue to come thick and fast for both sides as they are back in action on Wednesday night, before playing again at the weekend as they battle it out for the sixth spot. Veljko Paunovic's side squandered their opportunity of reducing the gap on Friday night, but a win here could see them amend for that draw.

Luton meet Reading having lost all three of their Championship games against the Royals since the start of the last season, scoring once and conceding 10. Moreover, Reading are looking for consecutive away league wins against Luton for the first time since February 1996.
However, Luton have won back-to-back league games, and are looking to win three on the spin within a single season for the first time since winning six in a row in February 2019, while Reading have won just one of their last seven league matches (D4, L2) - they had won three in a row before this.
