Luxembourg hosts Portugal in Tuesday’s 2022 World Cup Qualifier at Stade Josy Barthel. Read our reasons for Luxembourg vs Portugal prediction and betting tips.
The hosts’ recent progress was confirmed with a tremendous 0-1 victory away to the Republic of Ireland in their opener. That was only Luxembourg's fourth away victory ever in World Cup or European Championship qualifiers. In 125 games. Four wins, 10 draws 111 defeats. Their last such win was over a decade ago, 2-1 against Switzerland in September 2008. After a very decent performance in the 85th minute, Ireland didn’t clear a long ball and it landed on Gerson Rodrigues, who smashed home a brilliant first-time effort that flew into the bottom corner from about 30 yards out. They finished second in their Nations League group, finishing three points behind promoted Montenegro in League C. They’ve still ranked some 93 places below the visitors who should simply prove too good here, and with Portugal winning nine of those previous ten meetings without conceding, we’re backing an away win to nil this Tuesday alongside a 0-2 correct score.
Luxembourg made an almost perfect start and it is very difficult to find a different approach and give players from the bench opportunity to jump in from the first minute. It would be harsh for Holtz to drop any member of the team who started and performed at the Aviva Stadium at the weekend. Experienced defender Lars Gerson may therefore be restricted to an appearance from the bench unless the hosting manager opts for a five-at-the-back to stop the rampant attack of Portugal. Brothers Vincent Thill and Olivier Thill look set to man the engine room once more, but the oldest in the family - Sebastien Thill - was an unused substitute against Ireland and is unlikely to force his way into the lineup here.
Luxembourg: Moris; Martins, Mahmutovic, Chanot, Jans; Martins Pereira; Rodrigues, Barreiro, O. Thill, V. Thill; Sinani
Portugal has four points from their first two qualifiers. They needed an own goal to beat Azerbaijan 1-0 and they were held to a 2-2 draw away to Serbia. Selecao raced into a two-goal lead at halftime through a Diogo Jota brace only to see the Eastern Europeans equalize in the second half. Serbia made a couple of changes in team and strategy and Aleksandar Mitrovic and Filip Kostic, concluded their better performance with two great goals but a dramatic conclusion to Portugal's battle with Serbia eventually led to Cristiano Ronaldo ripping off the captain's armband and storming down the tunnel as the final whistle blew on Saturday. The game ended in controversy when a last-gasp strike by Cristiano Ronaldo was cleared off the line. Replays showed the ball had crossed the goal line and would have been given if there was VAR or goalline technology present.
In a blow to Portugal but a boost to Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes picked up his second booking of the tournament against Serbia and is suspended for the trip to Luxembourg, so Ruben Neves should fill in. Neves's Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate Joao Moutinho was not involved whatsoever last time out and may be forced to miss this one as well, which could allow Renato Sanches to impress the manager. Santos will certainly shuffle the pack once again given the hectic schedule and disappointing result last time out, so Nuno Mendes, Domingos Duarte, and Joao Felix are all in contention to start.
Portugal: Lopes; Cedric, Duarte, Dias, Mendes; Pereira, Sanches, Neves; Jota, Ronaldo, Felix

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
