Olympique Lyonnais face Bayern Munich on Wednesday 19 August in the second of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League semi-finals at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon.
After beating Juventus and City Lyon showed that is capable to go all the way and lift the most valuable trophy in club football. Very good defensive games against teams with more individual quality and creative counterattacks are more than a decent sign that anything is possible in modern football and that the underdogs are rare in one leg matchups. After many seasons in which Lyon was trying to play attractive football with high goalscoring games, new coach Rudy Garcia changed terms of their defensive set-up and commitment. They are now ready to fight to every inch of the field and calmly wait for their chance to arrive.
They played only one competitive match since March when the season in France was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic but also in that match with PSG in the final of the French Cup they showed a different approach and willingness to operate on more running and less creating. Goalless draw and defeat only after penalties vs a team that has real offensive power and great ideas in the final third showed that Lyon could be a problem for Juventus. After they lost 2-1 in Torino and went through on away goal they were praised by pundits but nobody gives them better odds to survive in the next round vs Manchester City. They found a way to raise their performance level in that game and had luck with Sterling miss a few minutes from the end when they had a 2-1 lead.
Lyon style doesn’t fit for Bayern for sure because they are more physical, stronger, faster team than Barca and ready to park the bus with fast counter-attacks. Germans will have to battle for open space but also Lyon must play even better if they want UCL final. They will probably come out on the pitch with the same starting eleven like vs City because they have no suspensions or injury worries.
Bayern Munich stunned the football world with an 8-2 UCL quarter-final win over Barcelona. That was the heaviest ever European defeat on the Barca team that was 4-1 down after 31 minutes. Bayern didn’t pull the foot from the gas and then hit four more in the final half with Muller(2), Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry, Josh Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski, and Phillipe Coutinho (2) all scoring for Hansi Flick’s side. It is a big statement of intent from the club that won already three domestic trophies in this season but they must win two more games to win fourth and most desirable.
All fans know that Bayern uses domestic competitions as some sort of preparation for UCL. Every season they try to build a team that will not only play in the quarter-final or semi-final, they want to win the final. After a restart of the Bundesliga, they passed with ease almost all rivals and in the game vs Chelsea, they showed that the team is in incredible shape. This isn’t the greatest Barcelona side in their history for sure, but it is still a side with immense quality, hugely embarrassed defensively by Bayern team that could easily have scored in double figures.
Hansi Flick’s team is showing a great work ethic, they work hard and with this intensity and they are very hard to control or break. They also have so much fun on the pitch with special players capable to create and score against any rival. After their quarter-final demolition of Barcelona, they are huge favorites to win it all and they are backed with stats. They have beaten every opponent they've faced in the UCL this season and scored a record-breaking 39 goals in those games. They don’t have major worries apart from Pavard who will miss the next match because of an ankle injury.

Bayern is a huge favorite against anybody in the football world but vs Lyon, they could be less dangerous and creative. Their win is the most predictable outcome and Levandowski to score at any time is the preferable bet for this game.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
