Mainz showed that Bayern is shaky in the defense, but can M'gladbach keep their net empty against Robert Lewandowski when Borussia hosts Bavarians on Friday?
Matthias Ginter ranks among the best defenders in this season's Bundesliga for challenges won and distribution, but Gladbach hasn't been quite so consistent. They ended 2020 on a run of four games without a win, before breaking the streak with a narrow 1-0 victory at promoted Arminia Bielefeld in their first fixture back from the winter break. Although only their fifth win of the current league campaign, the result took them up to seventh and to within three points of fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund, who travel to second-placed RB Leipzig on Saturday.
Breel Embolo is set to continue in attack after scoring his third goal in five league games last time out, but Marcus Thuram is suspended. Midfielder Jonas Hofmann came through the Bielefeld triumph unscathed following a lengthy absence, while forward Alassane Plea returned as a substitute after missing the Matchday 13 defeat to Hoffenheim with an injury of his own. Ramy Bensebaini, who scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Bayern in 2019/20, also made his comeback but is not expected to nudge Oscar Wendt out at left-back. Inter Milan loanee Valentino Lazaro is still carrying a groin problem.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Wendt - Kramer, Neuhaus - Embolo, Stindl (c), Hofmann - Plea
Out: Lazaro (groin), Thuram (suspended)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Marco Rose
Bayern is on the longest unbeaten run of any Bundesliga team (12 matches) and that is because the defending champions have claimed a league-high 18 points from a losing position in 2020/21. Mainz had two goals advantage at half time last weekend, but Bayern managed to overturn the game in their favor by scoring five in the next 45 minutes. Robert Lewandowski is still capable to cause havoc against any defense, he is averaging a goal every 57 minutes in the Bundesliga this term. Hansi Flick's 2019/20 treble winners begin the weekend with a two-point cushion on Leipzig, following successive wins over Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen, and Mainz. Lewandowski scored braces in all three to swell his season tally to 19 goals - a Bundesliga first after 14 matches. Equally as impressive is how Bayern have fallen behind in their last eight matches without losing once.
Joshua Kimmich's influence has been marked in the two matches he's featured in the following injury, while in-form winger Kingsley Coman returns after pulling a muscle in the 2-1 win over Leverkusen. Midfielder Leon Goretzka is likely to start at the expense of Corentin Tolisso, but Serge Gnabry is a doubt, which could mean a seventh Bundesliga start of the campaign for Leroy Sane, who was among the goals in the 5-2 rout of Mainz. Niklas Süle is in line to take the place of the form-shy Benjamin Pavard at right-back.
Bayern: Neuer (c) - Süle, Boateng, Alaba, Davies - Kimmich, Goretzka - Sane, Müller, Coman - Lewandowski
Out: Nianzou (thigh)
Doubtful: Gnabry (shin), Roca (muscular)
Coach: Hansi Flick

Bayern has too many weapons for any Bundesliga team at the moment. They are also very vulnerable in the defense department so both teams to score is an almost sure bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
