There are many reasons to believe that Bayern Munich will defend its title in the Bundesliga. The start of the Nagelsmann era will not be that easy, as Borussia Mönchengladbach has tools to hurt them at home in the opening game of the new season on Friday. Read our Gladbach vs Bayern Munich prediction and betting tips.
M'gladbach was one of the teams that showed Bayern could be well beaten in the Bundesliga. Their 3-2 win against the champions at home came after two goals deficit. The Foals always have some trick in the bag for Bavarians who are used to storm past rivals in Germany. Good thing for the hosts, they didn't change the team at all comparing to last season. Their defensive general Mathias Ginter who played every minute last term has one more year in his contract, and team captain Lars Stindl is still there as their most productive player with 14 goals and 10 assists. French pair Plea – Thuram could be decisive or Gladbach if they reach their full potential and stay out of injuries.
The only real change is on the bench as Adi Hutter, ex-Eintracht coach replaces Marco Rose who will be in charge in Dortmund. Their competitive season started on Monday and they had some problems reaching the win in the DFB pokal first round. Lars Stindl's first-half strike was enough to provide them deserved victory against third-tier Kaiserslautern. That was also a debut for young American full-back Joe Scally in senior football. He could get more minutes on Friday as Ramy Bensebaini is still injured and Luca Netz just arrived from Hertha Berlin. Jonas Hofman who scored two goals against Bayern in the last game could start from the bench and with Thuram also injured, Wolf will probably get a chance from the start.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Scally - Kramer, Neuhaus - Herrmann, Stindl (c), Wolf - Plea
Out: Doucoure (Achilles' tendon), Embolo (thigh), Kone (knee), Zakaria (match fitness)
Doubtful: Bensebaini (thigh), Beyer (illness), Thuram (knee)
Coach: Adi Hütter
After grabbing six trophies in one season, Bayern settled with just one in the last term. As usual in the last nine years, they were crowned as Bundesliga champions and helped Robert Lewandowski to score the most goals in Bundesliga history. Polish striker outscored Gerd Müller's total of 40 goals by putting in the net 41 in only 29 appearances in 2020/21 - including a hat-trick in the 6-0 victory vs Gladbach the day they secured the title again. Bayern will start a new era on Friday as one of the most talented coaches in the world, Julian Nagelsmann succeeded Hansi Flick. Ex Hoffenheim and Leipzig coach has a tough task, to continue to win trophies in domestic competitions, aim as higher in the Champions League and play more beautiful football than Bayern did with Flick.
Nagelsmann starts his Bayern journey at a tough time in a tough place. Most of his best players had little time to prepare with the team after the EURO, and their preseason was unusual as captain Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich didn’t feature in those games but they are both ready to start at Borussia Park. The likes of Benjamin Pavard, Leon Goretzka, Thomas Müller, Serge Gnabry, and Leroy Sane have had some minutes in those test matches but Nagelsmann tried to keep them out of injuries more than he tried to fit them in the new system. The good news for the new Bayern coach is that roster is almost the same, and the only signing is the man he knows very well, as central defender Dayot Upamecano comes from Leipzig. As Lucas Hernandez is out and Alphonse Davies probable but still unfit after injury, there could be more minutes for youngster Stanisic at the left-back at the start of the season.
Bayern: Neuer (c) - Pavard, Nianzou, Upamecano, Stanisic - Kimmich, Goretzka - Sane, Müller, Gnabry - Lewandowski
Out: Hernandez (knee), Roca (ankle)
Doubtful: Choupo-Moting (back), Davies (ankle), O. Richards (foot), Tolisso (match fitness)
Coach: Julian Nagelsmann

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
