Borussia Mönchengladbach hosts Borussia Dortmund at Borussia Park on Friday night.
The 1-0 win over Werder Bremen in midweek made it three wins from four for Gladbach and moved them within just a point of fourth-placed Dortmund at the halfway stage of the campaign. That victory was hard-fought as Marco Rose rested several first-team regulars, no doubt with one-eye on Friday. Captain Lars Stindl, Ramy Bensebaini, and Denis Zakaria were all late substitutes against Werder but are expected to come back into the starting lineup for the visit of Dortmund.
With Breel Embolo missing out in midweek due to a reported coronavirus safety breach, Rose may continue with Alassane Plea leading his attack or chose to deploy Stindl through the middle. He also has the option of fielding Thuram after serving a five-match suspension but the Frenchman will most likely have to make do with a place on the bench, while 18-year-old American Joe Scully still has to wait for his debut due to a knock that has so far denied the teenager from training with his new teammates.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Bensebaini - Kramer, Neuhaus - Hofmann, Stindl (c), Thuram - Plea
Out: Embolo (not included), Lazaro (groin), Reitz (pelvis)
Doubtful: Doucoure (match fitness), Scally (knock)
Coach: Marco Rose
Dortmund missed the opportunity to jump into second place as they were undone 2-1 by Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena on Tuesday and BVB could do with a statement win to get their title hopes back on track. Julian Brandt's first goal of the season will have been one positive for Edin Terzic to take from that defeat, but Thomas Delaney's fifth yellow card of the season in that loss deprives Dortmund of the 29-year-old in Gladbach.
Fortunately, Emre Can return from a similar suspension and is likely to partner either Brandt or Jude Bellingham in the center of Dortmund's midfield. The Black and Yellows will be hoping Haaland can improve on his recent run of scoring that has seen him score in just one of his last five Bundesliga appearances. He'll have captain Marco Reus for the company in an attack against the 31-year-old's former club. At the back, Dortmund is expected to be unchanged from midweek, with Dan-Axel Zagadou still at least a fortnight away from a return.
Dortmund: Bürki - Meunier, Akanji, Hummels, Guerreiro - Can, Bellingham - Sancho, Reus (c), Reyna - Haaland
Out: Delaney (suspended), Hazard (thigh), Schmelzer (knee), Witsel (Achilles tendon), Zagadou (hamstring)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Edin Terzic

Gladbach has lost all 11 of their last Bundesliga matches against Dortmund – the longest winless run against any other team in the club's history. Both teams were struggling in the last round but also both teams to score looks like a most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
