The reward for victory in the latest battle of the Borussias is a place in the DFB Cup semi-finals, but will it be Marcus Thuram or Erling Haaland moving a step closer to Berlin this Tuesday? Read our reasons for Gladbach vs Dortmund prediction and betting tips.
For Gladbach coach Marco Rose, Tuesday's fixture will be his first against his future employers since his move to Dortmund was announced earlier in February. "That's not going to be at all difficult for me," he said. "I'm the coach of Gladbach and have goals with this club, and I'm responsible for the sporting success and the players here." That responsibility grows since the cup offers the Foals their best chance of silverware this season, after a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City left their UEFA Champions League hopes dangling by a thread. Gladbach is a three-time DFB Cup winner and two-time runners-up. They are playing in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2016/17.
He is therefore set to name his strongest team this Tuesday with Florian Neuhaus expected back in the starting XI for Jonas Hofmann, who was still laboring with a knee injury in the 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig at the weekend. Christoph Kramer is also set to miss out, but Patrick Herrmann could make a start instead of Valentino Lazaro. Lars Stindl is Gladbach’s leading marksman in all competitions in 2020/21 with 13 goals, including one in the DFB Cup. Patrick Herrmann is the joint second-highest scorer in this season’s competition with three goals in two games.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lazaro, Ginter, Jantschke, Wendt - Zakaria, Neuhaus - Herrmann, Stindl (c), Thuram - Embolo
Out: Lainer (thigh)
Doubtful: Bensebaini (knee), Doucoure (match fitness), Hofmann (knee), Kramer (knock)
Coach: Marco Rose
Dortmund boosted their top-four hopes with a 3-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld at the weekend, and with a 3-2 win at Sevilla to defend on 9 March, a place in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League is in their own hands. Keeping in contention in another cup competition is Edin Terzic's priority this week, though, and he is almost spoilt for choice with the likes of Roman Bürki, Thorgan Hazard, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Lukasz Piszczek all back in full team training. Terzic may rotate his team a little, which could provide an opportunity for 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko to make a rare start, although Erling Haaland remains the number one choice to lead the attack, in front of the in-form Jadon Sancho.
Dortmund won their fourth DFB Cup in 2017/18 but was knocked out in the last 16 in the following three seasons. They beat Gladbach 2-1 in the 2019/20 second round, before bowing out to Werder Bremen in the last 16. Jude Bellingham is the DFB Cup’s youngest goalscorer, aged 17 years, two months, and 16 days. Reyna was a week older when he opened his Dortmund account in last season’s third round. Youssoufa Moukoko will be 16 years, three months, and 10 days old at kick-off.
Dortmund: Hitz - Morey, Can, Hummels (c), Guerreiro - Bellingham, Delaney, Dahoud - Sancho, Haaland, Brandt
Out: Akanji (muscle tear), Schmelzer (knee), Witsel (Achilles' tendon)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Edin Terzic

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
