Borussia Mönchengladbach has a chance to reach out knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League when they host Inter Milan on Tuesday.
Gladbach is on course to reach the Champions League knockout rounds for the first time in three attempts. The Foals are the second-highest scorers (14) in this season’s Champions League, behind holders Bayern (15). They scored 13 goals in their two previous Champions League campaigns combined. Nine different players, plus one from the opposition, have found the net for Gladbach in the 2020/21 Champions League. Alassane Plea is Borussia’s top scorer in this season’s competition with three goals, followed by Lars Stindl and Marcus Thuram on two.
Still better known as Lillian's son, Thuram scored his first Bundesliga goal in two months as Gladbach warmed up for the visit of Inter with a comfortable 4-1 home win over Schalke on Saturday. The France international now has four for the season in all competitions - two of which fell in the 2-2 draw with rivals Real Madrid on Champions League Matchday 2.
Gladbach also shared four goals with Inter in their Group B opener, with only a late Romelu Lukaku equalizer denying Marco Rose's men all three points. They have since put 10 without reply past defending Ukrainian Premier League champions Shakhtar Donetsk to get control of their destiny in this group. As long as they avoid defeat to Inter, and match or better Shakhtar's result against Real, a place in the knockout rounds will be theirs.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Wendt - Kramer, Neuhaus - Lazaro, Stindl (c), Thuram - Plea
Out: Hofmann (thigh)
Doubtful: Bensebaini (not included), Wolf (ill)
Coach: Marco Rose
Group leaders Gladbach are six points better off than bottom side Inter, after suffering back-to-back defeats to Real. Anything other than a win at Borussia-Park would make qualification to the round of 16 a mathematical impossibility for the Italians. Antonio Conte's side beat Sassuolo 3-0 at the weekend to keep the pressure on city rivals AC Milan at the top of Serie A, but have won only five of their 20 UEFA meetings against German opposition.
Inter were clinical at the Mapei Stadium, harassing Sassuolo into errors and making the most of them to end the Neroverdi’s unbeaten record. This win allowed Antonio Conte’s men to catch Sassuolo in second place on 18 points and inflict the first defeat of the season on Roberto De Zerbi and co. It was a lightning start with Lautaro Martinez and Alexis Sanchez pouncing on a poor clearance and beating the on-rushing goalkeeper within four minutes. Arturo Vidal’s cross was then accidentally bundled into his net by unlucky Vlad Chiriches, who would later go off injured. Filip Djuricic saw his effort hit the upright for the hosts, but Roberto Gagliardini completed the rout with a sensational half-volley off the outside of the boot.
Inter lost 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund in last season's group stage - a result which ultimately cost them a place in the knockouts. Achraf Hakimi, who scored twice for BVB on that fateful night for his current employers, is one of two familiar faces among the traveling party. Ivan Perisic - a Champions League winner with Bayern Munich last season - is expected to start, but former Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern midfielder Arturo Vidal are suspended. Marcelo Brozovic is negative after self-isolation and Aleksandar Kolarov still waits for the green light to be with the team.
Inter: Handanovic (c) - D'Ambrosio, De Vrij, Bastoni - Hakimi, Barella, Gagliardini, Young - Perisic - Lukaku, Martinez
Out: Vecino (knee), Vidal (suspended)
Doubtful: Brozovic, Kolarov (not included), Padelli (not included), Pinamonti (ankle)
Coach: Antonio Conte

M’gladbach is in great form, and Inter despite poor results in this group has tremendous quality so both teams to score looks like the most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
