Borussia Mönchengladbach's meeting with Mainz on Saturday could be tough for visitors, as the Foals are unbeaten in their last nine Bundesliga meetings with Mainz, winning the last five in a row.
French forward Marcus Thuram was ruled out of last weekend’s goalless draw at Wolfsburg due to a knee problem. While coach Marco Rose explained the injury was “nothing dramatic”, Lilian's son does remain a doubt for Matchday 22, even if only as a precaution. Valentino Lazaro made his comeback in his absence after struggling with a muscle injury since the turn of the year. Despite the draw, which has extended Gladbach’s winless run in the league to three games, Rose is expected to stick with the same team as the Foals aim for a confidence-boosting result ahead of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg against Manchester City next week.
Gladbach is only outside the European places on goal difference behind Borussia Dortmund – where Rose will take charge next season – and six points off the top four, which would ensure another Champions League campaign. They do face a tough run of fixtures after this one, though against RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen on either side of a DFB Cup quarter-final against BVB.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Bensebaini - Kramer, Neuhaus - Lazaro, Stindl (c), Hofmann - Plea
Out: Doucoure (match fitness)
Doubtful: Thuram (knee), Zakaria (knee)
Coach: Marco Rose
Mainz is no pushovers despite sitting second from the bottom in the table. They have seven points from the last four games, encompassing wins against Leipzig (3-2) and Union Berlin (1-0) before coming from two goals down to draw at Leverkusen last weekend. The 05ers have eight points from their seven matches under Bo Svensson, which have all come against teams in the top half of the table. Substitute Robert Glatzel’s 89th-minute goal started that comeback at the BayArena and he could be given the nod from the start with Robin Quaison not expected to be fully fit in time.
Goals are a must with Mainz starting the matchday four points behind Arminia Bielefeld and Hertha Berlin in safety. Lack of goals is the problem, as defender Moussa Niakhate is Mainz's top scorer this season with three goals. Jean-Philippe Mateta was on seven, before leaving the club for Crystal Palace in January. Mainz has taken eight points from as many league games in 2021. They gathered six across their first 13 of the campaign.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Bell, Niakhate - da Costa, Barreiro, Kohr, Mwene - Latza (c) - Szalai, Onisiwo
Out: Fernandes (ankle)
Doubtful: Quaison (knee)
Coach: Bo Svensson

Gladbach is the big favorite to win the next match but Mainz will try to steal a valuable point for the relegation battle. Both teams to score looks like the most reasonable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
