Borussia Mönchengladbach could restore their French connection of Marcus Thuram - Alassane Plea in attack as they host struggling Schalke on Saturday evening.
Thuram and Plea were Gladbach's top scorers in the Bundesliga last season, scoring 10 goals apiece, but they have only started two games together this season, most recently the 3-1 derby win over Koln on 3 October. Now free of injury and illness, the compatriots could be together in attack but Marco Rose may also give Breel Embolo the start ahead of Plea after the Swiss international's superb bicycle kick in the midweek with Shakhtar Donetsk. Captain Lars Stindl also scored one and created another as they claimed a 4-0 win, boosting their hopes of a historic qualification for the UEFA Champions League knockout stage.
Denis Zakaria made his comeback this week after a long-term knee injury, but the Switzerland midfielder is likely to start on the bench as he is recovering up to full speed. After two frustrating results in the Bundesliga - a 4-3 loss to Bayer Leverkusen and a 1-1 draw with 10-man Augsburg - Gladbach will be determined to get back to winning ways against very bad Schalke, who have picked up just three points from a possible 24.
Gladbach: Sommer (c) - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Wendt - Kramer, Neuhaus - Herrmann, Stindl (c), Thuram - Plea
Out: Bensebaini (not included), Hofmann (thigh)
Doubtful: Wolf (ill)
Coach: Marco Rose
It was back on 17 January that Schalke last tasted victory in the Bundesliga, when they beat Gladbach 2-0 at the Veltins-Arena. Since then it has been a long and difficult year for the eight-time German champions, who have faced challenges both on and off the pitch. Coach Manuel Baum has to deal with a few absentees this weekend, including striker Goncalo Paciencia; Steven Skrzybski could deputize for the Portugal international alongside Mark Uth.
There is some good news for the Royal Blues as Alessandro Schöpf is available again. Along with Germany international Suat Serdar, who returned from a hamstring injury last weekend, the Austrian should help to shore up the Schalke midfield, and could even add to his two goals in the DFB Cup. Bastian Oczipka pulled his thigh in training on Tuesday, which may mean a rare start for Hamza Mendyl on the left, while Frederik Rönnow continues in goal, with second-choice Ralf Fährmann sidelined at any rate by a groin strain.
Schalke: Rönnow - Thiaw, Kabak, Nastasic - Mascarell (c) - Schöpf, Serdar, Bozdogan, Mendyl - Skrzybski, Uth
Out: Bentaleb (not included), Fährmann (groin), Harit (not included), Ibisevic (not included), Matondo (knee), Paciencia (knee), Sane (knee)
Doubtful: Kutucu (not included), Oczipka (thigh), Raman (knee)
Coach: Manuel Baum

Gladbach must be heavy favorites to win this game. They have struggled to repeat performances from the UEFA Champions League in the Bundesliga, but Schalke is without any confidence at the moment.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
