Relegation-bound Mainz must win some points against Augsburg on Sunday. Read our reasons for Mainz vs Augsburg prediction and betting tips.
Mainz may still be in the bottom two, but the 05ers aren't going down without a fight this season. From trips to Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach in their last two games, Bo Svensson's side has returned home with four points, including three won by new hero Kevin Stöger in the final minutes at Borussia-Park. Stöger also scored the last-minute equalizer at the BayArena a week earlier and is now the club's joint-top scorer for this season despite only making three Bundesliga starts for them in 2020/21. Glatzel scored his first for the club in the draw at Leverkusen and while Stöger may find it hard to earn a start in midfield, the on-loan Cardiff City striker could come in alongside Karim Onisiwo from the off with Robin Quaison still a doubt for the game.
Edmilson Fernandes is the only confirmed absentee for Mainz, who are unlikely to make many changes from the side which snatched all three points against the Foals. That result helped them close the gap to Arminia Bielefeld in the relegation/promotion play-off spot - and Hertha Berlin a place above them - to just a single point coming into Matchday 23.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Bell, Niakhate - da Costa, Barreiro, Kohr, Mwene - Latza (c) - Glatzel, Onisiwo
Out: Fernandes (ankle)
Doubtful: Quaison (knee)
Coach: Bo Svensson
While Mainz has revived their season, Augsburg will be happy to see the back of the last few weeks, if only for the opposition they have had to face. In their last six outings in the Bundesliga, Augsburg came up against Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Wolfsburg, RB Leipzig, and Leverkusen and was denied a three-point lift over Peter Bosz's side in that most recent game last weekend by a 95th-minute Edmond Tapsoba equalizer. It means Die Fuggerstädter is still just five points above the drop zone with crucial fixtures against Mainz and Hertha Berlin coming up next for Heiko Herrlich's side.
Much like his opposite number, Herrlich looks unlikely to change things for this Sunday's game with Florian Niederlechner finding form once again in attack and Iago a long-term absentee in defense. Marco Richter and Carlos Gruezo could force themselves into the starting line-up, especially with the latter being an unused substitute in the draw with Leverkusen last weekend.
Augsburg: Gikiewicz - Framberger, Gouweleeuw (c), Uduokhai, Pedersen - Strobl, Khedira - Caligiuri, Benes, Vargas - Niederlechner
Out: Finnbogason (calf), Iago (ankle)
Doubtful: Jensen (thigh)
Coach: Heiko Herrlich

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
