Jonas Hector could be in line to make his long-awaited comeback when Koln travel to Mainz on Saturday.
Mainz can't afford to think about Koln's probable teamsheet. Defeat to promoted Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday was their seventh in 10 league games already this season, and leaves them in the automatic relegation places, two points from safety. If results go against them this weekend, they could slip to the bottom. Although winless in their opening five home games of a Bundesliga season for the first time, Mainz's record of seven wins from nine at home to Koln is their best against any club in the top flight. Mainz’s eight clean sheets against them are also their best against a Bundesliga opponent.
Kevin Stöger scored from the bench against Bielefeld and is pushing to be rewarded with a place in the starting line-up. Captain Danny Latza could also start after missing three games through suspension and injury. Aaron Martin made his first start of the campaign on the left-hand flank, which would have enabled Daniel Brosinski to revert to his preferred side had an injury in the warm-up not denied him game time last week. Karim Onisiwo offers a more attack-minded alternative, should Jan-Moritz Lichte choose to shuffle his pack in search of what would be only his second win as head coach.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Hack, Niakhate - Brosinski, Barreiro, Latza (c), Martin - Boetius, Quaison - Mateta
Out: Mwene (ankle), Öztunali (thigh), Szalai (knee)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Jan-Moritz Lichte
Koln has won just once in the league this season, but are beginning to show signs of life. After coming away from Borussia Dortmund with a wholly unexpected 2-1 win, they held unbeaten Wolfsburg to a 2-2 draw to carve out a two-point cushion on the bottom two. Koln may be on a club-record run of 21 games without a clean sheet, but they do have the league’s tightest defense away from home, conceding just four goals in 2020/21.
Jan Thielmann opened the scoring against the Wolves, with Ondrej Duda also on target. Despite welcoming back summer signing Sebastian Andersson to the matchday squad last time out, the consensus seems to be that head coach Markus Gisdol will stick rather than twist in the attack. Club captain Hector's return to full team training offers Gisdol a thought, but there'll be a place for teenager Sava-Arangel Cestic following his assured defensive displays against Dortmund and Wolfsburg.
Hector was on the scoresheet the last time Koln beat Mainz (2-0 in May 2017), securing the club’s first European qualification in 25 years on the final day of the season. Three-goal top scorer, Ellyes Skhiri has struck in two of the last three games, including a brace in the last away game in Dortmund – the club’s only three points of the season.
Koln: T. Horn (c) - Cestic, Bornauw, Mere - Skhiri - Wolf, Özcan, Rexhbecaj, Jakobs - Thielmann, Duda
Out: Czichos (groin), Kainz (knee)
Doubtful: Hector (neck)
Coach: Markus Gisdol

Mainz played some good football lately but in the last match, they were heavily punished again after missed chances and lack of focus in the defense. Both teams to score looks like the most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
