Mainz will try to ruin RB Leipzig's start of the season in which they are trying to win their first trophy. Bo Svensson saved Mainz from relegation late in the last season and home form could be the key for his side once more. Read our Mainz vs Leipzig prediction and betting tips.
Bo Svensson was a legend in Mainz even before he saved this team from relegation in the last season. After a great and long playing career in Mainz Svensson took charge as a coach in January after a long spell of bad results 05 had. With only seven points before the winter break, Mainz looked like relegation bound but Svensson and his staff made significant changes in playing style and finished as the 12th team in the league. It is hard to explain how Mainz turned the season around but if you look into stats from the second half of the season you will find some brilliant facts, among them, Mainz had more points than Leipzig in that period.
After playing some adventurous and exciting football in the first half of the season, Mainz turned to a more direct style, they were calm and firm in the defense and trying to exploit rival weaknesses through set-pieces and counterattacks. With few good results, confidence rose to the roof, and after that Mainz was just riding on that wave. New season, new challenges, and only one wish as always, to avoid relegation. They came through a penalty shootout in the first round of the DFB Cup last weekend to beat fourth-tier Elversberg 8-7 after Burkardt had scored late equalizers in regular and then extra-time. The core of the team is almost the same and with Svensson in charge, they could be a very dangerous team for any rival.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Bell, Niakhate (c) - Widmer, Barreiro, Kohr, Lucoqui - Boetius - Burkardt, Szalai
Out: Onisiwo (not included), Stach (suspended)

Coach: Bo Svensson
As Nagelsmann left for Munich in search of trophies, American Jesse March is the new man on the bench for Leipzig. Ex-Salzburg coach but also an ex-assistant coach in Leipzig will not spend too much time to adapt to ambitions and goals of this club that made great things in a short period of time. Once semifinalists of the UEFA Champions League, Leipzig is in need of their first trophy, and they were close in the last season again as finalists of the DFB Cup. They changed the coach, but they also changed central defenders, as Dayot Upamecano went in Munich and Ibrahima Konate in Liverpool so Mohamed Simakan is Willi Orban’s new partner in the last line.
They were active in the transfer period, they were searching for a proven goalscorer and found second-best in the Bundesliga. Portuguese striker Andre Silva, who finished second in last season’s Bundesliga scoring tables behind Robert Lewandowski on 28 goals should fit well in the team with many playmakers, as Nkunku, Olmo, Forsberg, Angelino or Hungarian Szoboszlai all stayed in Leipzig. American started with a big win in the DFB Cup, so they look ready for the Bundesliga premier match. In the last season, their strong defense made difference and now they are looking like a team that will try to play more open and adventurous. Forsberg, Nkunku, and Marcel Sabitzer shared the lead at the top of Leipzig’s scoring charts with seven Bundesliga goals apiece and that was not good enough to replace Bayern at the top of the standings.
Leipzig: Gulacsi - Mukiele, Simakan, Orban, Angelino - Sabitzer (c), Kampl, Haidara - Forsberg - Silva, Nkunku
Out: Halstenberg (ankle), Henrichs (knee), Saracchi (knee), Sörloth (ill)
Doubtful: Lookman (knee)
Coach: Jesse Marsch

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
