Bayer Leverkusen is in search of their first win of the campaign away to a struggling Mainz side on Bundesliga Matchday 4 on Saturday.
It's been a season to forget for Mainz so far, with defeats to RB Leipzig, VfB Stuttgart, and Union Berlin leaving them as one of just three teams - alongside Cologne and Schalke - yet to earn a single point in 2020/21. Mainz have lost their opening three fixtures for the second season in succession. Four defeats to start a campaign has happened just once before - under Jürgen Klopp in 2005/06.
Jan-Moritz Lichte took over from departed head coach Achim Beierlorzer in an interim capacity before the international break, and the 4-0 defeat in the German capital against the team that had trouble to score several goals in one game will have left him with plenty of thoughts – first must be how to tighten up a defense that has already conceded 11 times. Second, how to make his midfielders and attackers to be more creative and resilient in front of rival goal. Their incapacity to even make a chance against Union was annoying. Lichte worked under Sami Hyypia and Sascha Lewandowski as Leverkusen’s assistant coach between July 2012 and April 2014.
Lichte has virtually a full squad to choose from, with Jeremiah St. Juste expected to overcome a recent shoulder complaint. New signing Kevin Stöger is pushing for a place in midfield, while Robin Quaison and Jean-Philippe Mateta are expected to lead the attack once more. Quaison and Mateta are Mainz’s only two Bundesliga goalscorers so far this season, with one each. Quaison needs three more to tie Yunus Malli as the club’s all-time leading Bundesliga marksman on 29.
Mainz: Zentner - Mwene, St. Juste, Niakhate, Brosinski - Kunde, Latza (c) - Onisiwo, Stöger, Quaison - Mateta

Leverkusen has drawn all three of their league games so far, including tough fixtures against Wolfsburg and Leipzig, but will see this game as a golden opportunity to grab their first victory in 2020/21. Leverkusen is winless in their first three matches of a season for the third time in four years. They have never gone their opening four fixtures of a season without a win.
With that in mind, Jamaica international Bailey will hope for the chance to add more pace and power to an attack that has only found the net twice so far, especially as striker Patrik Schick is absent through injury. Lucas Alario should begin up top in his place, but summer signing Santiago Arias has been ruled out for several months after sustaining a serious ankle injury in international duty with Colombia. The right-back is joined on the sidelines by Florian Wirtz, who picked up an injury with the Germany U21s. Playing minutes for a youngster prevented a late transfer opportunity to sign Mario Gotze who went to PSV. Wirtz made his Bundesliga debut for Leverkusen at 17 years and 15 days, a club record. Peter Bosz has won all three of his Bundesliga meetings with Mainz to date. Last season’s 5-1 success at the Opel Arena was his biggest away win as a Bundesliga coach.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - L. Bender, S.Bender, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Aranguiz (c) - Bellarabi, Amiri, Demirbay, Diaby - Alario
Out: Arias (ankle), Paulinho (knee), Shick (thigh), Wirtz (abdominals)

Coach: Peter Bosz

Mainz was a mess at the start of the season and they must heavily improve to earn some points. Leverkusen played decent football but must find goalscoring touch sooner rather than later and Mainz's bad defense could help the cause. Away win with several Bayer goals is expected.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
