Rock-bottom Mainz will have to find a way against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday if they want to make a fast turn around in the new season.
A change in coach has failed to effect at Mainz. They parted company with Achim Beierlorzer after losing their opening two games of the 2020/21 campaign while conceding seven goals, and continued in the same way, getting five in defeats to Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen under successor Jan Moritz-Lichte. No Mainz coach has ever started their tenure with three straight defeats. Lichte could be the first.
As well as being bottom of the table, they have the joint-worst attack (two goals scored), second-worst defense (12 goals against), and are the only team so far this season still to register a single point. Their only victory has come in the DFB Cup opening round, away to fourth-tier Havelse. They have conceded a joint-high four headed goals already this season.
Jean-Philippe Mateta, who scored a hat-trick in that fixture, has been the club's most productive outlet with a goal and assist on Matchdays 1 and 2 respectively. Robin Quaison was also on target in the cup but hasn't fired in the league since the penultimate weekend of 2019/20 - the scene of his team's last league win. Mainz's 13-goal top scorer last term, the Sweden international is due a recall after being deployed from the bench in the 1-0 loss to Leverkusen. Quaison is set to make his 100th Bundesliga appearance. He opened the scoring in both meetings with Gladbach last season, though Mainz went on to lose 3-1 on each occasion.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Kilian, Niakhate, Brosinski - Kunde, Latza (c) - Öztunali, Boetius, Quaison - Mateta

Coach: Jan-Moritz Lichte
Gladbach is unbeaten in eight meetings with Mainz, winning their last four in a row. Mainz's current form is not the only reason Gladbach are heavy favorites. They are unbeaten since losing to Borussia Dortmund on the opening weekend, and very nearly made a triumphant return to the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, with only a late Romelu Lukaku goal denying Marco Rose's men all three points at Inter Milan.
Lapses in concentration had already cost Borussia maximum points against Union and Wolfsburg, but the form of Jonas Hofmann surely means it is only a matter of time before they put in a repeat showing of their 3-1 derby win over Koln. They have drawn two matches from a winning position this season, dropping points after taking the lead as often as in 2019/20 in its entirety. Five of their six goals against, meanwhile, have fallen in the second half of matches.
Gladbach has never lost in 14 games with the freshly Germany international on the scoresheet; he's also produced a team-leading three goals and four assists so far this season. Fellow national team representatives Ginter and Florian Neuhaus can expect to start, despite a Champions League home tie with Real Madrid looming large. Captain Lars Stindl, a substitute against Inter, should return at the expense of Breel Embolo. Midfielder Denis Zakaria is back in training following injury but is unlikely to be risked.
Rose made 65 Bundesliga appearances for Mainz, as well as a further 85 in Bundesliga two. The Gladbach coach was also part of the team that gained promotion to the top flight for the first time under Jürgen Klopp.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Ginter, Elvedi, Bensebaini - Kramer, Neuhaus - Hofmann, Stindl (c), Thuram - Plea
Out: Poulsen (shoulder)
Doubtful: Lazaro (match fitness)
Coach: Marco Rose

Gladbach is the favorite to win this game because Mainz isn’t showing little signs of improvement. Away team is better and only fatigue from the UCL in Milan can stop them from the win in this match.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
