Winless Mainz and Schalke have their best chance for the first victory of the season on Saturday when they face each other in the derby of the relegation zone.
Mainz is on the bottom of the Bundesliga standings after six matches, after they failed to win in the league all season. They were heavily beaten 3-1 and 4-1 by RB Leipzig and promoted VfB Stuttgart on Matchdays 1 and 2 – bad start that cost Achim Beierlorzer his job as head coach. Results haven't been better under Jan-Moritz Lichte, who has overseen defeats to Union Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and, most recently, Augsburg. Mainz's six-match winless run to start a Bundesliga season has been matched just once before - in 1991/92 by Fortuna Düsseldorf, who went on to finish bottom.
Mainz has the third-worst attack and second-worst defense in the league, with five goals scored and 18 conceded. Lichte has named the same starting line-up for two weeks running and isn't expected to change it for the visit of a Schalke side that has registered two fewer and conceded as many more goals, so former West Ham United midfielder Edimilson Fernandes will likely be among the substitutes once again.
Quaison was top of the shots last season with 13 but has scored just once in six outings this term. Mateta is Mainz's leading scorer in 2020/21 with three Bundesliga goals.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Kilian, Niakhate, Brosinski - Kunde, Latza (c) - Öztunali, Boetius, Quaison - Mateta

Schalke's winless run stretches back some 22 matches, to their 2-1 triumph over Borussia Mönchengladbach on 17 January 2020. Schalke are on the second-longest winless run in Bundesliga history after Tasmania Berlin, who went 31 games without a win in 1965/66 and have made their worst start to a season in 53 years.
There have been some good signs in recent weeks, with two points from their first four matches with Manuel Baum as head coach. Further encouragement came in midweek as they recorded a much-needed confidence boost 4-1 win over fourth-tier Schweinfurt in their rearranged DFB Cup first-round tie.
Baum made eight changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Stuttgart in their previous Bundesliga outing, recalling - among others - goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann, midfield pair Nabil Bentaleb, and Benjamin Stambouli, and forward Benito Raman. Summer signing Vedad Ibisevic marked his full debut for the club with a goal, but should - like the majority of those rotated in on Tuesday - drop back to the bench. Ibisevic scored his first competitive Schalke goal in midweek but hasn't found the net in the Bundesliga since the final day of last season for Hertha Berlin.
Defender Ozan Kabak is back after a five-match ban but Malick Thiaw could keep his place having impressed in recent weeks, while Amin Harit hopes to go one better than his assist against Stuttgart with a first Bundesliga goal in almost a year. Schalke have the worst attack (three goals scored) and worst defense (20 goals conceded) in this season's Bundesliga.
Schalke: Rönnow - Thiaw, Sane, Nastasic - Ludewig, Mascarell (c), Bozdogan, Oczipka - Harit - Paciencia, Uth

It is difficult to predict a match with the teams that struggled from the start of the season. It is obvious that both sides made significant improvements in the past weeks but it could not be enough for the win. Both teams to score is our preferable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
