Werder Bremen will try everything to reverse their flagging fortunes when they travel to Mainz on Saturday.
Mainz away is no easy task for Bremen in their final league meeting of the calendar year, despite their current struggles. Jan-Moritz Lichte's side recorded their first clean sheet of the campaign in Tuesday's 0-0 draw with Hertha Berlin, but have only won once in 2020/21 and sit 10 points adrift of safety in the automatic relegation zone. Mainz's record under Lichte reads W1, D3, L6. That's an average of 0.56 points per game compared to 1.19 under predecessor Achim Beierlorzer. Without a win in five, it's fair to assume seven-goal top scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta will be recalled to the starting line-up after beginning the Hertha stalemate on the bench. The Frenchman has two goals in three career meetings with Werder.
Daniel Brosinski, Danny Latza, and Jean-Paul Boetius are also expected to be rotated back in for a fixture Mainz won home and away last term. That said, they're winless in six home league games since securing their top-flight status by beating Bremen on the penultimate weekend of 2019/20. Robin Quaison scored his first Bundesliga hat-trick as Mainz thumped Bremen 5-0 away last season. The Swede was also on target in the 3-1 home win.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Hack, Niakhate (c) - Burkardt, Latza, Fernandes, Brosinski - Boetius - Mateta, Quaison
Doubtful: -
Out: Mwene (ankle), Öztunali (thigh), Szalai (knee)
Coach: Jan-Moritz Lichte
Mainz almost closed curtains for Werder last season, who ultimately survived via the relegation play-offs. After an opening-day defeat to Hertha, a seven-game unbeaten run pointed to the recovery in the early part of 2020/21, but four straight defeats have seen them fall to within four points of the bottom three. American forward Josh Sargent rebuffed any notion of concern in the aftermath of Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund, defiantly stating, "We're not worried, it's a different season", but two wins in 11 games suggest Florian Kohfeldt's men are not out of the woods just yet.
Sargent has scored three of his seven Bundesliga goals on the road, but not one has resulted in an away win. Bremen have scored at least once in all but one of their last 15 league fixtures. Jean-Manuel Mbom could be sacrificed in midfield to accommodate Manchester United loanee Tahith Chong as Werder goes in search of a first league win since 3 October. Niclas Füllkrug and Leonardo Bittencourt are Bremen's top league scorers in 2020/21, with four and three goals respectively.
Bremen: Pavlenka - Gebre Selassie (c), Toprak, Friedl, Augustinsson - Eggestein, Möhwald - Bittencourt, Osako, Chong - Sargent
Doubtful: -
Out: Füllkrug (calf), Rashica (thigh), Selke (thigh)
Coach: Florian Kohfeldt

It is a tight call regarding the winner or any hint of the outcome but both teams to score could be the most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
