Man City host Sheffield Utd at the Etihad (Manchester) in the 21st round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, January 30.
MAN CITY VS SHEFFIELD UTD MATCH ANALYSIS
Man City’s most recent matches saw them reach the finals of the League Cup, progress to the Round 5 of the FA Cup, and beat Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and West Brom in the league, without conceding once and netting 12 goals in the process. They have taken the lead from Man Utd but could return to second-place until the weekend, as their Manchester rivals have a game in hand. As for the visitors, they come into this match on the back of the two wins –a 2-1 win in the FA Cup Round 4 against Plymouth and a shocking 2-1 win at Man Utd. It took until early January for the Blades to pick up their first points, but they still remain rooted to the foot of the table, 10 points from safety.
It was after their impressive victory at Chelsea on 3 January that Pep Guardiola declared his Manchester City were back. More than 20 days since have reinforced that view, with Man City winning their last seven Premier League matches to move up to the top of the table ahead of the weekend’s action. Guardiola's men were as low as 15th at one stage in the campaign, yet they suddenly find themselves with the title race effectively in their hands.
On Tuesday, they hammered the Baggies 5-0 at the Hawthorns to overtake Man Utd at the top of the Premier League. City were without Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, and Gabriel Jesus and had no out-and-out forward in their team, and still could have scored more goals in an 11th straight win. Gundogan continued his inspired run with two excellent strikes, while Joao Cancelo and Riyad Mahrez netted third and fourth before the break. Sterling got in on the act in the second half as City ended a day on top of the table for the first time this season.
After 186 frustrating days, the Blades finally got to experience a winning feeling that had not just deserted them but appeared to have packed up and left the country. Two wins on the trot gave Sheffield Utd slim hopes that they can avoid relegation. The Blades do not lack effort or commitment but, yet again, that has not been enough for them. They don't seem to be able to hurt teams and Chris Wilder admitted himself that his team needs an "incredible run" to avoid relegation after their awful start to the season.
Against Man Utd, the Blades were 12-1 outsiders to win this game, having previously collected three points just once this season against Newcastle, but they battled to a second victory which they fully deserved. Their in-form hosts may have felt this was a foregone conclusion before kick-off, but Sheffield Utd were well up for the job. With 18 games still remaining, this will give the South Yorkshire side a boost as they aim for the unlikeliest of survival missions.

City have kept 10 clean sheets in their 18 Premier League games this season - only in 1976-77 (17 games) have they reached 10 in fewer games in their league history. They were knocked off the summit last Wednesday when United beat Fulham, but now they are four points clear at the top after shocking United’s loss. The determination they showed to claim their seventh successive league win underlines that they are here to stay in this title race.
The victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday night gives the Premier League's bottom side the faintest glimmer of hope that they can stave off a relegation they seemed to be heading towards in record time. However, they will be encouraged by the fact that they have won consecutive games in all competitions, after going 21 matches without a win beforehand (D3, L18).
