Man United host Milan at the Old Trafford (Manchester) in the first leg of the Round of 16 in the Europa League and the match kicks off at 5.55 pm (UK) on Thursday, March 11. Read our reasons for Man United vs Milan prediction and betting tips.
Man United put a patchy run of form behind them with Sunday’s fine derby triumph and should now be full of confidence when facing Milan. After finishing third in their Champions League group, United looked very comfortable at this level when brushing aside Real Sociedad. A 4-0 triumph in Turin in the rearranged opening leg allowed the Red Devils to cruise through a goalless stalemate at this venue. As for Milan, who start as outsiders, they have happy memories of Old Trafford after beating Juventus here in 2003 to be crowned champions of Europe. However, they scraped past Red Star Belgrade on away goals in the last knockout phase (3-3), and have now won just one of their previous 12 European knockout away games (W1, D4, L7).
Although winning the league looks beyond them, United’s 2-0 win away to City on Sunday will have given them belief that they can win silverware and are rightfully one of the favourites for the Europa League title. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have lost just one of their last 17 matches in all competitions and should have too much for Milan, whose own recent form has been inconsistent. The Red Devils had an easy path to the last 16 of the competition after a comfortable triumph over Real Sociedad in the previous round.
Still, their form has not been overly impressive. They managed to beat Sociedad 4-0 during the away leg at the Anoeta Stadium but drew 0-0 at Old Trafford. They have since played a couple of more goalless stalemates against Chelsea and Crystal Palace in the Premier League and have defeated the Premier League leaders in their own backyard to earn the bragging rights. Solskjaer’s men will be up for this and can be backed to get the better of the Rossoneri, who will be missing their talisman in Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Like United, Milan have seen their domestic title hopes falter due to some indifferent recent performances. However, the Rossoneri are still within striking distance of neighbours Inter after Sunday’s 2-0 victory at Verona. With a tricky clash with Napoli coming in between two Europa League fixtures, that could well be reflected in how Stefano Pioli approaches this tie. The Rossoneri topped their pool thanks to taking maximum points off Celtic and Sparta Prague, scoring plenty of goals in those games.
On the other hand, a 3-0 loss and a 1-1 draw with Lille makes far less impressive reading, though, as well as only edging out Red Star on away goals after a couple of draws in the round of 32. Injuries have cursed Milan at an all-important time of the season, however, which has seen them slip up in the race for the Scudetto and stutter in form somewhat. Such a big clash in the last 16 means a competition favourite is guaranteed to be eliminated early on, and the first leg at Old Trafford is the perfect opportunity to gain the advantage over United.

Man United meet Milan having previously met five times in the European Cup or Champions League, including three times at the semi-final stage, and the score stands at 4-1 in the favour of the Italian giants.
Milan will be looking for an away goal to take into the return and their recent record on the road has been good. They have scored in all but two of their last 27 away games and have also scored two or more goals in 11 of their last 15 on their travels, hence we’re back both sides to score on Thursday.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
