Man Utd host Leeds at Old Trafford in the 1st round of the 2021/22 Premier league season and the match kicks off at 12.30 pm (UK) on Saturday, August 14. Read our reasons for Man Utd vs Leeds prediction and betting tips.
MAN UTD vs LEEDS: GAME EXPECTATIONS
Man United fans will be desperate to see new signings Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in action on Saturday but may have to wait a week longer before they are considered for starts. Meanwhile, Leeds' pre-season has been a bit of a rollercoaster, as was their 2020/21 campaign and their respective last season's December trip to Old Trafford ended in a 6-2 defeat. Nevertheless, after a 16-year absence, the Whites played some thrilling football en route to a ninth-placed finish. As for United, their title challenge fell apart at this stage last season, as they paid the price for a poor start. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must get that right this term if they want to be in contention.
MAN UTD vs LEEDS: THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR
Clearly meaning business for 2021/22, Man United are set to debut their 21-year old marquee signing Jadon Sancho. The former Dortmund man arrives with an impressive win rate of 81.25% from 32 goalscoring Bundesliga matches (W26, D6) and bags of game-changing pace. Yet, for all their expectations, Man United will chase a first top-flight title since 2012/13, as a failure to win any silverware will see the club equal their longest trophy drought. Also, worryingly, United conceded 28 goals at home in the PL last season, their most at Old Trafford in a single campaign since 1962-63 (38).
Leeds finished a respectable ninth back in May, ending their first top-flight season since 2003/04 with four straight wins. They were fearless from day one last campaign, when they equalised three times in a 4-3 loss at Anfield, setting the tone for them to draw none of their PL away games (W10, L9) during 2020/21. Leeds also averaged more goals scored per away game (1.79) than at home (1.47). Yet, they were often caught out early when travelling, with only one side conceding more first-half away goals than the ‘Whites’ (21) last term. Leeds have played more PL matches at Old Trafford without winning than any other stadium (13).
MAN UTD vs LEEDS TEAM NEWS
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could opt to keep the same line-up that started the 4-0 win over Everton in our final pre-season friendly on Saturday or he could choose to integrate several Reds into that team that have more recently returned from later holidays, such as Fred and Paul Pogba who both appeared from the bench in the weekend’s victory. Jadon Sancho could make his United debut having trained for the first time as a Red on Monday, while prospective new signing Raphael Varane and the imminently returning Edinson Cavani could also be options for Solskjaer.
On the other hand, Bielsa has addressed the troublesome left-back spot, replacing the departing Ezgjan Alioski with Junior Firpo from Barcelona, and star players Rodrigo and Raphinha will be looking to build on their debut campaigns. Jack Harrison, whose switch from Man City has been made permanent, is expected to start on the left wing, while Robin Koch is ready to deputise for Kalvin Phillips at MC if required. Leeds will still be without Gaetano Berardi, Diego Llorente and Adam Forshaw as they are doubtful with fitness issues.

The Red Devils finished 12 points behind champions Man City last season and have already spent big money to strengthen their squad. They have not started the season strongly in recent times though and face tough opposition first up. Leeds will not make it easy for the Red Devils, but United’s counter-attacking style is perfect for this fixture against Bielsa’s side, and they should claim an opening three points in front of their home support.
