MAN CITY VS NEWCASTLE MATCH ANALYSIS
Manchester City followed a goalless draw in the Manchester derby and disappointing 1-1 against West Brom at the Etihad, with a win at Southampton (0-1) at the weekend which puts them in the 8th place with 23 points ahead of their match against Newcastle who remain 14th (18pts) in the standings after a 1-1 home draw against reinvigorated Fulham on Saturday.
Guardiola’s men are eager to regain the domestic title, and following a slow start to the season, they have shown signs of improvement. They are doing alright on all fronts, but the busy schedule and injuries are playing their part in the way how this season is unfolding for them. They are unbeaten in the last eight matches in all competitions (W5, D3). After the Manchester derby, which was an uneventful affair, ending in a stalemate behind closed doors at Old Trafford, they were not able to break the stubborn Baggies in midweek (1-1), but responded well at the St.mary’s last weekend.
They returned to winning ways in the Premier League and reduced the gap to the top four with a hard-fought victory over in-form Southampton. Raheem Sterling scored from Kevin de Bruyne's cutback after 16 minutes as Pep Guardiola's side stamped their authority following the hosts' energetic start. With this win, City moved one point behind fourth-placed Saints and eight adrift of leaders Liverpool, having played one game fewer than both.
Their Saturday’s opponents, Newcastle, lost the defensive solidity which had been a key facet of Newcastle's previous two Premier League campaigns. However, they were glad to find that formula again in their win against the Eagles (0-2) before their postponed fixture against Villa. After a week’s rest, they continued where they left and registered their first back-to-back win of this campaign against struggling West Brom (2-1). However, the Magpies went back to the winless ways as they shipped five at Leeds in midweek, and could only hold for a draw against Fulham last weekend.
The Cottagers took the lead just before the break and looked comfortable until the 62nd minute when defender Joachim Andersen was shown a red card for a foul on Wilson. The forward converted from the spot for his eighth goal of the season, as the home side earned a fortunate point. They were without winger Allan Saint-Maximin and captain Jamaal Lascelles who are both suffering from the long-term effects of coronavirus and it is not known when they will return.

While Manchester City's struggles in front of goal continued in a victory against Southampton, their hopes of mounting a Premier League title challenge remain intact courtesy of a watertight defense. Following their 1-0 victory at St Mary's on Saturday afternoon, no side has conceded fewer goals in the competition than the 12 of Pep Guardiola's side after 13 games.
As for the Magpies, victory over West Brom, a competent 77-minute display against Leeds, and a not-so inspiring draw against the Cottagers suggest that his side could continue producing displays that have so far seen them keep clear of the relegation battle. The former Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, who has scored eight goals in 12 Premier League appearances this season, has arguably been the Magpies' best signing in recent seasons and will be a player to keep an eye on against Man City.
