MIDDLESBROUGH VS BIRMINGHAM MATCH ANALYSIS
Middlesbrough resume championship action after their 1-3 away win at Wycombe on January 2 and a 2-1 loss to Brentford in Round 3 of the FA Cup last Saturday. They are just outside the top-six with 26 points but could leapfrog Watford to a play-off berth if the results go their way. As for Birmingham, they come into this match on the back of a seven-game winless run (D1, L6) in all competitions. They most recently lost 2-0 to Blackburn at home in the league and to Man City (3-0) in the R3 of the FA Cup. Aitor Karanka's side have claimed just one point from their last seven league games, leaving the club in 18th position in the table, four points from the relegation zone.
Neil Warnock's Middlesbrough moved within a point of the play-off places after coming from behind to beat struggling Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park. Boro were jolted into life by Uche Ikpeazu's early goal for the home side, curled beyond Marcus Bettinelli after neat footwork, and goals from Marcus Browne, Marcus Tavernier, and Chuba Akpom turned the game the Teessiders' way. Boro are made of tough stuff under veteran manager Warnock and are looking up at possible promotion rather than engaging in the kind of relegation battle which he inherited last season.
Defeat by a revived Wednesday in the previous round ended a three-game winning run but an immediate bounce back to victory leaves Boro in seventh, top of the chasing pack in a congested top end of the table. On the other hand, their FAC campaign ended in London on Saturday as Brentford survived a second-half comeback by Boro to beat their Championship rivals and reach the fourth round. The result won’t affect their next league game much as they were without half of their usual first-team squad for the trip to London.
Birmingham boss Aitor Karanka, on the other hand, has been under pressure to play with more attacking intent with his team continuing to struggle for goals in the Championship. The Blues last won at Bristol and Reading in early December, but a seven-match winless streak has put the Spaniard in a position where he will still have doubts about the change in his players’ mentality. The Blues came into the Blackburn game on January 2, hoping the new year would kick-start a turn of form.
But Armstrong’s 17th goal of the season and Bradley Dack’s curling effort after 92 minutes secured the 2-0 win against out-of-form Birmingham at St Andrew's. They followed it with a defeat against Man City in the FA Cup, where they were on the back foot for the most parts of the match. The gap in class was always going to be enough to see off the Blues who had now failed to score in the past four matches.

Middlesbrough have lost just one of their last 20 home games against Birmingham in all competitions (W12 D7), while the only win for City in their 13 Championship matches against Middlesbrough was a 2-1 home win last season under Pep Clotet.
Boro are looking to win five consecutive home league matches for the first time since a run of seven between April and September 2018 and the Blues have failed to score in each of their last four games in all comps, last going four without a goal back in March 2019.
BettingKick opinion is that Neil Warnock is most likely to come out victorious in his fourth consecutive fixture against the Blues, so the BettingKick's Middlesbrough vs Birmingham prediction is: Middlesbrough win
