Middlesbrough host Brentford at the Riverside Stadium (Middlesbrough) in the 28th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, February 6.
MIDDLESBROUGH VS BRENTFORD MATCH ANALYSIS
Boro come into this match on the back of two league defeats at home – against Blackburn (0-1) and relegation candidates Rotherham (0-3) – and a goalless draw at Norwich. They are in 7th, two points from the play-off berth and a fourth consecutive match without a win in the Championship would take them further away from the top-six. Brentford, on the other hand, have been impressive in the Championship so far, and sit 3rd in the standings. Having narrowly missed out last season, Thomas Frank’s side are right in the hunt for the automatic promotion again, after a 7-2 thrashing of Wycombe and a narrow 3-2 win against Bristol in midweek. The Bees are taking a 19-match (W11, D8) unbeaten run in the league into Saturday’s meeting with Boro.
Boro are made of tough stuff under veteran manager Warnock and are looking up at possible promotion rather than engaging in the kind of relegation battle which he inherited last season. The turnaround has been remarkable, but they now have lived up to the new expectations and push for the top-six. However, Rotherham added to the Boro’s home woes in midweek, inflicting them a third consecutive defeat at the Riverside, but they responded with a precious point against leaders Norwich.
In a dreadfully uninspiring game of few real chances at Carrow Road, Boro actually had the better openings even before the red card, as they escaped their poor home form with another point on the road. Boro were happy coming here and getting a draw - but there's a little tinge of sadness that they haven't got the three points. Nevertheless, Warnock praised the team who gave absolutely everything. After three games in five and a half days, the traveling that they have done, it's a remarkable effort.
Brentford, on the other hand, are the Championship’s most in-form side, picking up more points across their previous nine matches than any other team (W7, D2), and scoring 3+ goals in five of their seven wins in that run. Their current goal average of 2.0 is the division’s highest, unquestionably helping them stay unbeaten in the league since October. A win in this match would give Brentford a sixth away win in 9 (D3) in the second-tier.
As for their win on Wednesday night, Brentford recovered from conceding inside three minutes against Bristol City to extend their unbeaten Championship run to 19 games and move up to second. On the night, goals from Spanish winger Sergi Canos, star striker Ivan Toney and Iran international Saman Ghoddos ensured victory for the Bees. Brentford and their striker Ivan Toney, who scored his 20th goal of the campaign, have been stunning in recent weeks, and they will eye another three points next.

Middlesbrough are without a win in their last three games at the Riverside and have lost four of their last five matches against Brentford (D1) in all competitions, having won 10 of their previous 12 against the Bees (D2), which contributed to their positive record against the Bees (W9 vs W6) in their last 20 meetings. Brentford have won their last two away matches against Boro.
Middlesbrough have failed to score in their last three league games which doesn’t bode well for them against Brentford who are the league’s top-scorers (48) and are unbeaten in their last eight away league games (W5 D3).
