Middlesbrough host Cardiff at the Riverside Stadium (Middlesbrough) in the 33rd round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, February 27. Read our reasons for Middlesbrough vs Cardiff prediction and betting tips.
Neil Warnock’s side are enjoying a much-improved campaign and are just three points behind Cardiff who occupy the last playoff place in the league. However, Middlesbrough’s topsy-turvy form continued to rear its ugly head on Tuesday night after Neil Warnock’s side slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home to Bristol. As for the high-flying Cardiff, they are still unbeaten under Mick McCarthy’s leadership (W6, D2), and in this time, the Bluebirds’ have skyrocketed up into the top-six frame after an important away win at Bournemouth. They have another tough away six-pointer against another direct play-off rivals, Boro.
Promising changes after defeat at Derby on February 13, Warnock switched to a back three and brought Grant Hall and Fletcher back into the side for their first starts since September after both recovering from injuries. Back-to-back wins over Huddersfield and Reading have seemingly galvanized their ailing Championship play-off bid and with influential winger Marcus Tavernier back in training after a knee problem, they had high hopes before their clash with Bristol in midweek.
However, that they're playing catch-up in the play-off race, and have been for most of the season, is because the fine performances and victories have been punctuated by the sort of no-show that was served up against the Robins. After the control and calm of Reading came the chaos of a shambolic first-half display against the woefully out-of-form Robins, with Warnock admitting in the presser that he told his players at half-time that they'd embarrassed him in the opening period.
On the other hand, Cardiff's chances of achieving promotion have soared after a whirlwind few weeks which has seen them accrue seventeen points in seven games. Just a few short weeks ago, the thought of even entertaining a Bluebirds promotion this season had seemingly been flung out the window. However, under Mick McCarthy, City are now unbeaten in seven matches, winning their last five, and now occupy seventh place in the Championship table, one spot outside the play-offs.
Having struggled with inconsistency under Neil Harris, the Bluebirds have found their rhythm under new manager Mick McCarthy, who has changed the fortunes of the club in relatively less time. Not only is he unbeaten in seven games since taking charge last month, but Cardiff have also won each of their last six games in a row, including four consecutive away games for the first time since 2013! After a vital 2-1 win at Bournemouth in midweek, Cardiff have now displaced the Cherries in the last promotion play-off spot, a testament to his whirlwind start to life in the Welsh capital.

Middlesbrough meet Cardiff after taking just one point from their last five league matches against the Bluebirds (D1 L4), who haven’t won three consecutive away league matches against Middlesbrough since January 1928.
Middlesbrough have lost more home league matches in 2021 than any other Championship side (5), while the Bluebirds have won four more points than any other side (20 )since Mick McCarthy took charge of his first Championship match as Cardiff boss in January.
The reverse fixture in October ended without a winner (1-1), but on a current form, hosts will have to dig deep to avoid defeat here. BettingKick’s Middlesbrough vs Cardiff prediction is: Cardiff win
