Middlesbrough host Watford at the Riverside Stadium (Middlesbrough) in the 40th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 12.30 pm (UK) on Monday, April 5. Read our reasons for Middlesbrough vs Watford prediction and betting tips.
On Friday afternoon Neil Warnock's side struggled to hurt Jonathan Woodgate's Bournemouth as their play-off hopes took a big hit after a 3-1 defeat. A win at promotion rivals Bournemouth would have given the Teessiders belief they could finish in the top six, yet Boro’s aspirations were quickly extinguished. Meanwhile, Watford currently sit second on 78 points, nine points above third-placed Swansea, and are in superb form with ten wins from their last eleven matches after dispatching Sheffield Wed 1-0 on Friday. They will be keen to clinch automatic promotion as soon as possible though given their last four matches include trips to Norwich and Brentford before they host the Swans on the final day.
The table at full-time was similar to how it looked at the start of the day, with Boro six points shy of the top six. But that was before Barnsley and Reading's evening encounter. And Bournemouth, in sixth place, also have a game in hand on Boro. Warnock said before this game he wanted his side to ‘have a go’ and the recalls for Neeskens Kebano, Duncan Watmore and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who joined Yannick Bolasie in attack, showed intent.
Yet the lack of a natural striker and focal point made it difficult for Boro to build attacks and create chances or convert crosses into the box. The notable absentee from Boro’s team sheet was defender Dael Fry, who was missing through injury, and perhaps his absence showed as the Teessiders lost their shape at the back. The games don’t get any easier for Warnock’s side who will host second-place Watford on Monday until when their season may be effectively over.
As for Watford, the Hornets were fifth in the table when they made a managerial change in December, and the decision to sack Vladimir Ivic then and replace him with Xisco Munoz looks set to pay off, with Watford now being as close as it gets to an immediate return to the Premier League. The Hornets have hit form at the right time, and though they left Wednesday in the game by not being able to double the lead, they closed out a scrappy end to the game with little fuss and moved closer to the Premier League.
The game was ultimately decided by an early own goal but the Hornets struggled to find the fluency and attacking swagger that had been a feature of recent performances in their superb run. What the Hornets demonstrated though, were the other qualities that any side that wants to be successful needs. They were organised, resolute and largely defended well when necessary. The three points extended the Hornets' winning run to six in a row and 10 from their last 11 matches and are now hot favourites coming into the match against Boro.

Middlesbrough meet Watford having not previously won any of their last eight league games against the Hornets (D3, L5) since a 2-1 away win in October 2012. Watford can also do a double over the Teessiders after celebrating a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture in September.
On the other hand, Boro have won back-to-back home league games, having won just one of their previous seven at the Riverside (D1, L5). However, Watford have won four of their last five away league games (L1), scoring 11 and conceding only 2 in the process. Also, Neil Warnock has lost each of his last five league meetings with the Hornets and we just can’t see that run ending here.
