Midtjylland, the Champions League debutants, will host Atalanta in the interesting match of teams with very different playing styles.
Getting drawn in a group containing six-time champion Liverpool, storied Dutch team Ajax, and ascendant Italian club Atalanta is holding no fear for Midtjylland, whose outlook on soccer could easily be termed an experiment. They are trailblazers for analytics in European soccer, a team that scores nearly half of its goals from set-pieces. The deep analysis of the players’ performances, using metrics such as chances created and quality of crosses, helped Midtjylland pinpoint prospects who may have been undervalued because their underlying statistics suggested they were better than they appeared.
Midtjylland’s players work so hard on set pieces, which are regarded by the club’s analysts as a potentially huge difference-maker, that the team scored 49% of its goals last season from that source. There have been impressive results in Europe over the years — a 2-1 win over Manchester United in the Europa League’s last 32 in 2016 stands out — but reaching the lucrative group stage of the Champions League had been beyond Midtjylland until this summer, when the team beat the champions of Bulgaria (Ludogorets), Switzerland (Young Boys) and the Czech Republic (Slavia Prague) in qualifying to advance. They will be the fifth Danish team to play in the Champions League group stage and the first since FC Copenhagen in 2016-17.
The hosts will continue to be without center-back Kristian Dirks Riis and right-back Oliver Olsen, both of whom are long term injuries. There are no suspensions for the clash, and manager Brian Priske has the rest of the squad at his disposal.
Midtjylland (4-3-3): Jesper Hansen; Joel Andersson, Erik Sviatchenko, Alexander Scholz, Paulinho; Jens-Lys Cajuste, Frank Onyeka, Evander; Awer Mabil, Sory Kaba, Pione Sisto.
Gian Piero Gasperini's side was one of the best success stories of last season, marching to the quarter-finals of the competition against all the odds. It is easy to say that team from Bergamo is the most entertaining squad to watch in the last three seasons, with thrilling attacking football and individual battles all over the pitch in always intensive 90 minutes of play.
Atalanta lost vs PSG in their first meeting with the Champions League in the last 8 round but in this season they look like a club with an even bigger roster and fresh for a new challenge. Intensity and consistency will be the key elements of their season. They started extremely well in Seria A with three wins but they heavily lost vs Napoli on Saturday. What Atalanta done to several teams last season was the punishment they got from Napoli in the first half, conceding three goals in 20 minutes and lucky to end with just a 4-1 defeat in those circumstances. The only positives from this match were the return of the Josip Iličić after almost four months and another good strike from new signing Sam Lammers who got their consolation goal.
Atalanta will miss out on some fringe players like the goalkeeping pair of Pierluigi Gollini and Marco Carnesecchi, alongside striker Marco Tumminello. Mattia Caldara, who's on loan from Milan, is yet to feature in the 2020-21 season due to a knee injury and isn't expected to return until December.
Atalanta (3-4-2-1): Marco Sportiello; Berat Djimsiti, Jose Luis Palomino, Rafael Toloi; Hans Hateboer, Remo Freuler, Mario Pasalic, Robin Gosens; Josip Illicic, Alejandro Gomez; Duvan Zapata.

Atalanta is always tricky to predict, but their playing style is almost a guarantee for the goals so both teams to score and over 2.5 goals are our main bets with also the great possibility that the away team will return to winning ways on this trip to Denmark.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
