Milan needs a point to earn a winter champions status and have several players back from COVID against an Atalanta side coming off two draws.
Stefano Pioli said Milan winger Alexis Saelemaekers ‘ apologized to the whole team’ after the sending off against Cagliari on Monday. The Belgian youngster was brought on after 66 minutes to replace Jens Petter Hauge, but only eight minutes later he was sent down the tunnel with a second yellow. Cagliari pushed for a comeback but Milan held out and secured a 2-0 win thanks to two goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Pioli said Saelemaekers ‘was heartbroken’. “I don’t want to defend him, but they were two undeserved yellow cards. It’s true, however, that he must be more lucid and must grow from this mistake and not get caught up in the frenzy. He made this mistake in Naples too, but I liked his attitude after the match.”
The Rossoneri are three points clear of Inter at the top of the table, but if they finish the first half of the season level, their position will be decided by goal difference and that is in the Nerazzurri’s favor right now. It’s a mixed bag for coach Stefano Pioli because while Alessio Romagnoli and Alexis Saelemaekers are suspended, he does welcome back Theo Hernandez, Ante Rebic, and Rade Krunic after they recovered from COVID-19. Simon Kjaer remains in doubt with a knock, but Mario Mandzukic joins the squad as a free agent.
Milan (4-2-3-1): G Donnarumma; Calabria, Kalulu, Musacchio, Theo Hernandez; Kessie, Tonali; Castillejo, Brahim Diaz, Rebic; Ibrahimovic
Suspended: Romagnoli, Saelemaekers
Injured: Gabbia, Bennacer, Calhanoglu
Atalanta had the opportunity to leap into third place on Wednesday, but back-to-back stalemates with Genoa and Udinese (the latter a rescheduled Week 10 fixture) have seen their progress stall. Gian Piero Gasperini defended his team choices after the latest 1-1 draw and insisted Milan ‘deserves credit’ for topping the Serie A table. Luis Muriel canceled out the early opener from Roberto Pereyra: “Conceding a goal after 25 seconds made it more complicated for a game that was already difficult anyway, We had to play a really good first half to get it back on track. Considering the way it started, we have to accept this as a good result. We made up for an early error and spent almost the entire game in their half. Udinese kept slowing the playdown, breaking it up, so there was very little football in the second period and that’s disappointing.”
Gasperini was questioned on his squad rotation, as a win here would’ve allowed Atalanta to leap into third place: ''Playing every three days, we have to rotate, and we’ve got talented players with many different characteristics. We’ll start thinking about Milan from this evening, it’s an important match for us, it ends the first half of the season and we are in a position to fight it out with the big clubs. We are in the Coppa Italia and the Champions League, we’re up against the Serie A leaders next and it’ll be a way of testing ourselves. Milan deserves so much credit for all they’ve achieved in the first half of the season, even through difficulties and injuries. Stefano Pioli and his squad deserve praise.”
Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Gollini; Toloi, Romero, Djimsiti; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Gosens; Pessina; Ilicic, Duvan Zapata
Suspended: None
Injured: Pasalic, Ruggeri

Atalanta lost only one of their last 10 Serie A meetings with Milan, winning three and drawing six. This should be a very entertaining game with a lot of goals, so both teams to score is an almost sure betting tip.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
