Man United’s first Europa League encounter with AC Milan at Old Trafford was a very even contest and few would argue 1-1 was a fair result. After their stoppage-time equaliser at Old Trafford last week, Milan have an advantage coming into the re-match on Thursday night. However, all is not lost for Manchester Utd, as the Italian giants are winless in their last four home games and have actually failed to score in four of their last seven at San Siro. Moreover, Milan’s Serie A title hopes have slipped away due to Sunday’s 1-0 home loss to Napoli making it three defeats in six domestic games and here they must hold to a slight advantage going into the second leg to avoid another disappointment.
Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted United were below par in the opening encounter, looking very much second best as Milan led 15-7 in terms of attempts on goal. The Red Devils will take heart from an impressive away record in the Premier League this term, while they also thrashed Real Sociedad 4-0 in Turin in the last round. Also, having David De Gea, Cavani, Martial, Rashford, and possibly even Pogba back available after recent absences is a huge boost.
Although winning the league looks beyond them, United’s recent away win to City will have given them belief that they can win silverware and are rightfully one of the favourites for the Europa League title. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have lost just one of their last 18 matches in all comps. However, when failing to win the first leg at home, United have been eliminated from six of their last eight ties in European competition, including one against Milan in 2004-05 in the UEFA Champions League.
