After they failed to score in the Borrusen derby and suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat Gladbach needs better performance and points in a second-round Bundesliga match vs Union Berlin.
It was obvious that meeting with Dortmund in the first match of the Bundesliga isn’t an easy task for Gladbach who tried to close the rivals attacking space from the start but Haaland tested Yann Sommer with a header and a shot which deflected into the side-netting early. Jonas Hofmann also tried twice for the visiting team who appeared to eases the host pressure but Reyna showed his class after Jude Bellingham's first assist in the Bundesliga. An excellent Bürki save denied Gladbach from equalizing after Stefan Lainer effort but Ramy Bensebaini's mistake in the second half when he misjudged tackle and give away a penalty was crucial in the match. Norwegian coolly slotted the ball past Sommer for 2-0 and coach Marco Rose turned to the attacking duo that was great last season. Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea were sent on and the French pair combined to create a good chance immediately. Thuram was Gladbach's 10-goal joint-leading scorer in the Bundesliga last season, despite missing the final three games of 2019/20 with an ankle problem. He was forced to sit out the recent DFB Cup drubbing of minnows FC Oberneuland but was fit for thirty derby minutes. Dortmund scored at the final moments when Sancho and Haaland combined for the final 3-0 Gladbach loss.
Forward Breel Embolo despite his return to training in midweek will probably miss the next game. Head coach Marco Rose is also without influential holding player Denis Zakaria, so Ramy Bensebaini or Florian Neuhaus could drop in alongside Christoph Kramer to fill the void. Gladbach beat Union 4-1 in last season's corresponding fixture. It was their second-highest win of 2019/20. Only Bayern Munich had a better score on their pitch than Gladbach in the last season.
Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is set to make his 200th Bundesliga appearance. Only five other non-German goalkeepers have reached the milestone.
Gladbach: Sommer - Lainer, Elvedi, Ginter, Bensebaini - Kramer, Neuhaus - Hofmann, Stindl (c), Thuram - Plea
Doubtful: Embolo (match fitness)
Out: Benes (ankle), Lazaro (calf), Poulsen (shoulder), Zakaria (match fitness)
Coach: Marco Rose
Union gathered 4,300 fans in the Stadion Alten Försterei for the Augsburg game, far from their usual standards but they left the game in a bad mood after their team failed to earn anything from their premiere match of the new campaign. Robin Knoche missed the target for the hosts early and then Christian Gentner had to be substituted off due to injury. Sebastian Griesbeck made his Bundesliga debut as a replacement for Gentner, who is Union's most experienced player with 409 appearances. Although Union was better in the first half, a momentary lapse in concentration at the back let Vargas meet Raphael Framberger's cross to head Augsburg in front with their first meaningful attack of the match, five minutes before the break.
Union started the second half with even more urgency and more aggression. Coach Urs Fischer turned to skillful veteran Max Kruse to find a way through in the final 20 minutes, and he immediately made his presence felt for Gikiewicz, the pressure mounted from Union, and it soon paid off as Bülter met Lenz's cross from close range to draw level. Kruse has now played for six different clubs in the Bundesliga (Union, Bremen, Wolfsburg, Mönchengladbach, Freiburg und St. Pauli). The new Union striker had 11 goals and 11 assists in his last Bundesliga campaign with Werder Bremen in 2018/19, before spending the last term in Turkey with Fenerbahce. When the home crowd had a feeling that Union can even win the match Gregoritsch headed in Iago's cross to restore Augsburg's lead before Hahn scored for the final 3-1 in the closing stages. Gregoritsch scored just one goal all season in 2019/20.
Striker Anthony Ujah is still a long-term absentee, but summer loan signing Keito Endo could make the traveling squad following injury. Taiwo Awoniyi is also in contention, after joining Union on a season-long loan from English Premier League champions Liverpool. Just relegated duo from last season Paderborn and Fortuna Düsseldorf picked up fewer points on their travels last season than Union Berlin.
Union: Luthe - Friedrich, Knoche, Schlotterbeck - Trimmel (c), Andrich, Prömel, Lenz - Ingvartsen, Bülter - Awoniyi
Doubtful: Endo (thigh)
Out: Gentner (calf), Ujah (knee)
Coach: Urs Fischer

Gladbach has a proven home record and a better roster. A heavy defeat against a great Dortmund side will be compensated with three points and a home win is a preferable bet for this match.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
