Napoli needs a win the Derby Della Campania to keep their Champions League qualifications hopes alive, while Benevento wants to end a seven-game streak without victories. Read our reasons for Napoli vs Benevento prediction and betting tips.
The Azzurri have been eliminated from the Europa League round of 32 at hands of Granada and Gennaro Gattuso is facing an injury crisis in the attack with the injured Andrea Petagna and Victor Osimhen. Dries Mertens is still not 100% fit and is expected to start on the bench. Gennaro Gattuso again asked the media to spare his players after Napoli crashed out of the Europa League, but blasted Granada for ‘time-wasting.’ The damage was done in the first leg, losing 2-0 in Spain, so this evening’s 2-1 victory in Naples was not enough. “We conceded another absurd goal today after a ricocheted shot. We should have pride and regret because even over two games we showed that we have something more than them,” Gattuso told the media. “Those who represent Italian football have to make our presence felt more because over the last few days I’ve seen some incredible things on the field. If an Italian team dared do what Granada did today with the time-wasting, we’d have been on all the front pages. In the first half, we played about 16-17 minutes of football and in the second half, it was even worse. I think there ought to be respected and if there isn’t, then we need to make sure we are respected. The referee can’t lose three minutes every time there’s a foul. “If an Italian team does that, we’ll get massacred in all the papers.”
Gattuso was also referring to some other controversial decisions that have gone against Italian sides, for instance, the penalty denied to Lazio and the red card to Atalanta. The coach had said before the game that he wanted the media to blame him and not the players, a message he reiterated afterward. “The team needs to stay calm. People need to make life difficult for me and leave the players alone. I make the choice to play with three or four in defense, I am the first person responsible. This jersey weighs on players, we haven’t been able to work in training for months. Give me the responsibility, the players just have to focus on giving their best and recovering.”
Napoli is now out of every tournament, can they realistically aim for fourth place in Serie A? “If we don’t get depressed, yes. There are still 17 games to go, there are many points up for grabs. We have to look forward and manage to become a team that knows what it wants and what it needs to do. We are getting too many basic concepts wrong, but it can happen if you want to play out from the back and don’t work on it in training. It’s going to be a risk.” Dries Mertens made his comeback, although he was only meant to be on for 10-15 minutes and played over 30. “His ankle hurts less, his run is more fluid. We went a bit overboard today as we wanted to turn the tie around.”

Pippo Inzaghi praised his ‘lions’ after 10-man Benevento neutralized Roma for a precious point. ‘It feels like we won.’ It was a defensive masterclass from Le Streghe, who had Kamil Glik sent off after 57 minutes but barely allowed any genuine chances until stoppages. At that stage, Luca Caldirola performed a goal-line clearance, then a penalty was awarded for Daam Foulon’s foul on Stephan El Shaarawy, only to be revoked using VAR because of Lorenzo Pellegrini’s offside position. “We were lions. I am so proud, as it feels like we won, having held out with 10 against 11 with a Roma side that could introduce Dzeko, El Shaarawy, and Pedro off the bench,” Inzaghi told media. “If you don’t play like this against Roma, you will concede five goals. We knew that we’d get opportunities on the counter, which we did, but, once we went down to 10 men before the hour mark, I thought we had no chance. Instead, these lads proved once again how great they are. If we continue like this, we can stay in Serie A.”
Inzaghi walked off at one point in the final minutes, then returned and was sent off for wandering outside his technical area. “I was angry because it would’ve been truly unfair if we were left empty-handed after this performance. I even introduced Roberto Insigne because not only did it feel as if we weren’t running any risks at the back, we could even win it. Many of these players are in their debut Serie A season, so it would always take time to develop, but we try to play our game when we get the chance. If we just defend, we won’t be able to survive in Serie A. I’d told the lads at half-time that we could get all three points. We knew it would be a struggle against Roma, but also that Gianluca Lapadula could break away and cause them problems. Down to 10 for over half-an-hour, we’ll take it.”

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
