Cup holders Napoli welcome Serie B-leading Empoli to Stadio Diego Maradona on Wednesday.
Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso claimed it’s fine to win ugly and warned his players 'must stop messing around on social media' after Napoli picked up all three points away at Udinese through a late Tiemoue Bakayoko goal. Amir Rrahmani was in his first start for Napoli but had a nightmare by giving away the equalizer with a poor backpass and risking more howlers before he was substituted at half-time. “Napoli wants to always be beautiful, but sometimes being a bit ugly is a good thing. You can’t always be Brad Pitt, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Sometimes you have to be a bit ugly, like me. I look worse than usual now, as I’m all puffed up due to the cortisone shots, but I feel better…”
Following his disastrous debut against Udinese, which came a year after the first signing from Verona, Kosovar defender Amir Rrahmani could be offered another opportunity due to a lack of available bodies in the center of the back four. Giovanni Di Lorenzo - who faces an upcoming suspension in Serie A - is also likely to feature at the back, alongside Faouzi Ghoulam and Nikola Maksimovic, as first-choices Kalidou Koulibaly and Kostas Manolas are both out. In midfield, Stanislav Lobotka could feature, with veteran Fernando Llorente competing for a start with Andrea Petagna upfront. Dries Mertens and Victor Osimhen remain unavailable and instead aim to be fit for the Supercoppa Italiana against Juventus next week.
Napoli (4-2-3-1): David Ospina; Mario Rui, Nikola Maksimovic, Amir Rrahmani, Giovanni Di Lorenzo; Tiemoue Bakayoko, Diego Demme; Matteo Politano, Elif Elmas, Lorenzo Insigne; Fernando Llorente
Empoli has enjoyed an impressive campaign in Serie B and is one of the favorites for promotion into the Italian top-flight this season. Empoli warmed up for their toughest test of the season with a 2-0 win at struggling Cosenza last time out - with on-loan duo Ryder Matos (of Udinese) and Marco Olivieri (Juventus) starting up front - though will have had a nine-day break between games. The Tuscan outfit thrashed Brescia by a 3-0 margin in the fourth round of the competition and will want to pull off an upset in this match.
Such an upset did occur the last time these two clubs met, with Empoli pulling off a 2-1 home win in April 2019. Their XI that day featured current Serie A regulars including Milan pair Ismael Bennacer and Rade Krunic, now-Fiorentina goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski, and Sassuolo stars Hamed Traore and Francesco Caputo.
Empoli coach Alessio Dionisi must do without the injured Filippo Bandinelli and Davide Zappella but has most of his squad available to consider for selection. Expected to adhere to his usual 4-3-1-2 setup, Dionisi's defense should comprise Simone Romagnoli and Nicolo Casale in the center, with on-loan Riccardo Fiamozzi and former Avellino full-back Fabiano Parisi on the flanks. Playmaker Nedim Bajrami will support Matos and Olivieri upfront, though either Andrea La Mantia or Leonardo Mancuso - the club's top scorer in the Coppa Italia so far - could start in the front pairing.
Empoli (4-3-3): Alberto Brignoli; Aleksa Terzic, Nicolo Casale, Simone Romagnoli, Riccardo Fiamozzi; Leo Stulac, Nicolas Haas, Samuele Ricci; Leonardo Mancuso, Stefano Moreo, Andrea La Mantia

Empoli has just one loss from the start of the season and they are tough to break. Both teams to score could be a good bet because Napoli will not play with their regular central defenders.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
