Napoli takes on Parma in an important clash at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Sunday.
Gennaro Gattuso vented his irritation at the constant reports of his imminent Napoli dismissal after the 4-2 Coppa Italia win over Spezia. That result set up a two-legged semi-final with Atalanta and had been locked down by half-time with a 4-0 lead. “We need to get Dries Mertens and Victor Osimhen into shape after their injuries, so naturally when they come on, it becomes more difficult to keep a balance with the rest of the team, but they need playing time. If we don’t clarify this, then people will think we’re amateurs,” Gattuso told the media. “We didn’t create as much as usual tonight, but we did put the ball in the net. We’re having difficulties at the moment in front of goal and we do know that.”
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis released a statement assuring the club has ‘full confidence’ in Gattuso, following days of growing reports that either the coach would be fired or was being pressured into resigning. “I don’t need anyone to put their confidence in me. It irritates me that people ask me if I am meant to resign, but other colleagues aren’t given the same treatment. “I resigned at Milan because I didn’t believe that I could do any more there, but I won’t resign here. I am here, doing my work. I’ve been working for four years and am in my fourth Coppa Italia semi-final. I’d like to see how Inter does without Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez for a month…’’
The only potential absentees from Gennaro Gattuso's first-choice Napoli XI are Fabian Ruiz (COVID-19) and Dries Mertens, who is doubtful after suffering an ankle injury versus Verona. Full-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo and midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko are expected to return for Elseid Hysaj and Eljif Elmas respectively, after being benched in midweek, while Alex Meret could come in for David Ospina on the ever-rotating goalkeeper front. Victor Osimhen is now ready to lead the line from the start and should get the nod over Andrea Petagna at center-forward in the Azzurri attack.
Napoli: Ospina; Di Lorenzo, Manolas, Koulibaly, Rui; Bakayoko, Demme; Lozano, Zielinski, Insigne; Osimhen
Roberto D’Aversa warned that 2-0 defeat to Sampdoria ‘proves the club needs to intervene on the transfer market’ and explained why he came back to Parma. The Ducali were dealing with a huge injury crisis, yet were still unfortunate not to take something from the game, as they hit the woodwork twice. “This game proves the club needs to intervene on the transfer market because we were struggling even to make substitutions,” D’Aversa told media. “Having said that, we also have to accept that we created the goals ourselves. If we are in the bottom three, there must be a reason. We have to eliminate these errors.”
When told Parma had again not played badly but were unlucky, D’Aversa was in no mood to accept. “If we keep end up saying the same things, recriminating over the results we deserved and did not get, it can’t just be bad luck. It’s because we are not decisive enough and don’t take our chances. There is this fragility on a psychological level that we have to work on.” D’Aversa had taken Parma to three consecutive promotions following bankruptcy and was fired last summer, but recalled to replace Fabio Liverani. “I came back because together we took Parma from Serie C up to Serie A, securing safety in the top flight twice. Last season, we finished level on points with Parma and Fiorentina. I felt the need to protect and nurture what we created here because I do feel that there is something of me in this squad. It’s a tough situation, but all the years I was at Parma, I don’t think I ever had a situation that wasn’t tough.”
Parma's numerous availability issues have begun to ease - to the relief of coach Roberto D'Aversa - with Wylan Cyprien now recovered from illness and defenders Botond Balogh and Yordan Osorio also fit to rejoin training. Furthermore, Vincent Laurini and veteran center-half Bruno Alves - who has had a thigh injury - are both nearing a return to contention. French forward Yann Karamoh is out with an adductor issue, so Gervinho and Juraj Kucka should start in support of Andreas Cornelius upfront. Loan signing Andrea Conti could start at full-back, with fellow new boy Dennis Man set to join the squad in the coming days.
Parma: Sepe; Conti, Iacoponi, Gagliolo, Pezzella; Kurtic, Grassi, Hernani; Kucka, Cornelius, Gervinho

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
