Holders Napoli welcome Serie A surprise package Spezia to Stadio Diego Maradona on Thursday evening, trying to find their place in the semifinal of the Coppa Italia.
Gennaro Gattuso was frustrated by Napoli falling apart against Verona and transforming in the second half. ‘You can’t just go to the supermarket and ask for determination.’ The Partenopei had the perfect start with Chucky Lozano scoring within nine seconds, the quickest in the club’s Serie A history and third of all time, but Federico Dimarco, Antonin Barak, and Mattia Zaccagni turned it around for a 3-1 Verona victory. It’s another heavy psychological blow just days after losing the Supercoppa 2-0 to Juventus. “I make the decisions, so when we don’t win, it’s my responsibility. It’s disappointing because we had the right game-plan, we made it difficult for them, created four or five scoring opportunities in the first half, and could’ve killed the game,” Gattuso told media.
Antonin Barak’s goal was scored at the near post with an angled drive after Tiemoue Bakayoko’s pass was intercepted. “Look at the second goal, we lose the ball after we have four against four because we decide to turn backward and misplace the pass. That sparks the counter and we concede. We changed our usual style today, we didn’t make the vertical passes. We never tried to pass it around, and the few times we did, we conceded three goals,” Gattuso ended.
After two defeats Napoli coach is expected to field a relatively strong side in defense of the trophy he led them to last summer. Midfielder Fabian Ruiz will be unavailable due to COVID-19, but otherwise, the home side has a full squad to choose from - with forwards Dries Mertens and Victor Osimhen recently returning to action. Both Mario Rui and Kostas Manolas are tipped to return to the Azzurri defense, with Elseid Hysaj and Nikola Maksimovic most likely to make way, as David Ospina comes in for Alex Meret in goal.
Napoli: Ospina; Di Lorenzo, Manolas, Koulibaly, Rui; Demme, Bakayoko; Lozano, Zielinski, Insigne; Osimhen
Spezia lost at the weekend against Roma with a stoppage-time Lorenzo Pellegrini goal in a thrilling 4-3 loss. These teams already met in the Coppa Italia four days before, Spezia winning 4-2 in extra time with two Giallorossi sent off. Above all, two members of the Roma staff were fired after making too many substitutions, sparking a mutiny within the squad. The visitors had Luca Vignali suspended after the 0-0 draw with Torino, Riccardo Saponara, and top scorer M’Bala Nzola injured for their first-ever Serie A meeting with Roma.
Borja Mayoral was guilty of some quite astonishing misses against Spezia midweek, but he kept his cool this time to fire in when Lorenzo Pellegrini sprung the offside trap down the left on a long Spinazzola ball over the top and rolled across the box. Spezia bit back when Diego Farias managed to get a timid shot away from a tight angle and Pau Lopez only fingertipped it into the path of Roberto Piccoli to tap in from six yards. Mayoral completed his first Serie A brace to restore Roma’s lead, as he began the move from the center-circle, completed the give-and-go with Jordan Veretout, and drilled under on-rushing Provedel.
Spinazzola then flew down the left and picked a perfect pass, rolling across for Rick Karsdorp to tap in at the back post, despite Marchizza’s attempts at a clearance. Spezia got one back for a third goal in six minutes, as Diego Farias used his pace to sprint away from defenders and score from 15 yards on a Galabinov flicked header. Roma looked as if once again they were about to throw away points by wasting scoring opportunities, as at the 90th minute Daniele Verde pounced on a Chris Smalling error to score the equalizer. It still wasn’t over, as Spinazzola burst down the left, Bruno Peres chested down the cross and laid it off for Pellegrini to blast into the roof of the net from six yards. It sparked wild celebrations from the players and coach Fonseca and disbelief among Spezia players.
Spezia is unlikely to rotate as much as they did in the last round - though that policy proved effective, with several squad players coming to the fore. Lithuanian goalkeeper Titas Krapikas is expected to feature in goal, while in midfield, Matteo Ricci has overcome COVID-19 and may replace loanee Lucien Agoume. Andrey Galabinov is set to lead the attack, as top scorer M'Bala Nzola's continuing struggles with an ankle problem. Goalscoring hero in the last-16 Riccardo Saponara is also a doubt, so Daniele Verde should start on the right.
Spezia: Krapikas; Vignali, Erlic, Chabot, Bastoni; Pobega, Ricci, Maggiore; Verde, Galabinov, Farias

With so many goals in the matches against Roma and Napoli problems in the defense, both teams to score is the most reasonable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
