Newcastle host Arsenal at the St. James’ Park (Newcastle) in the 34th round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 2 pm (UK) on Sunday, May 2. Read our reasons for Newcastle vs Arsenal prediction and betting tips.
Newcastle have only lost one of their last eight Premier League matches to ease their relegation concerns. They are still fifth from bottom, but now have a nine-point gap on Fulham and are surely safe. The Magpies have impressively taken points off Tottenham, West Ham, Aston Villa and Liverpool in that time so there is no reason why they can't do the same against Arsenal on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Gunners returned bruised from their trip to Spain after a 2-1 defeat to Villarreal in a game that could have been a whole lot worse after Dani Ceballos was sent off. But they got a vital away goal and all eyes will be on the Emirates for an intriguing second leg tie. What won't intrigue them is a trip to St James' Park for a nothing game, especially against the resurgent Geordies.
Newcastle have eased their relegation worries over recent weeks, as they have moved nine points clear of the drop zone. Just a couple of months ago, there was a sense that the Magpies were in free fall, and that relegation was inevitable. Credit should be given to Steve Bruce for getting the best out of his players, as they have found a way to stop the rut. The Toon come into this fixture after drawing at Anfield last weekend against Liverpool, while they have been beaten on just one occasion in their last six Premier League fixtures.
Newcastle have also won two of their last four league games, with those wins being achieved against Burnley and West Ham. Furthermore, their form against the big six in the Premier League has improved recently, as they have taken two points from fixtures against Tottenham and Liverpool. After easing clear of the relegation zone with a cracking run of results Newcastle are now fancied to maintain the momentum when hosting Arsenal who look set for mid-table mediocrity.
Arsenal will be wary of the Newcastle upturn in form, but their attentions could still be elsewhere on Sunday afternoon. The Gunners will come up against Newcastle before the second leg of their Europa League tie against Villarreal. Gunners have saved their best performances of the season for the European competition, as they look to be in a battle to finish in the top half of the standings in the Premier League.
The Gunners are just one point above Aston Villa, as they have lost two of their previous four fixtures. Arteta’s men were beaten last time out by Everton, as a shocking mistake from Bernd Leno gifted the Toffees all three points. On course for their worst league placing since 1994/95 (12th), Arsenal will be hoping to avoid a European hangover and will be mindful of their lowly win-rate this season when playing after a Europa League game. Still, with 16 wins in the last 17 outings versus Newcastle, Arsenal may be facing the right opponent.

Newcastle meet Arsenal having previously lost 15 of their last 16 league games against the Gunners, winning the other 2-1 in April 2018. After losing their first three Premier League away games against Newcastle, Arsenal have suffered defeat in just 3 of their subsequent 22 visits to St James’ Park (W11, D8).
Arsenal’s main focus will be the Europa League, which means that a number of changes will be made by Mikel Arteta for this fixture. For that reason, we can see Newcastle claiming a first win against Arsenal in the league since 2018.
