Newcastle host Aston Villa at the St. James’ Park (Newcastle) in the 28th round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Friday, March 12. Read our reasons for Newcastle vs Aston Villa prediction and betting tips.
Newcastle’s poor form has seen them drop down from the midtable positions to just above the relegation zone. After playing out an uneventful 0-0 draw against Sam Allardyce’s West Brom last weekend, Steve Bruce’s men are currently a point and a place above both teams in 16th after Fulham’s improved performances have boosted their chances of survival. As for Aston Villa, after a shocking defeat at the hands of almost relegated Sheffield Utd and a goalless draw in the latest installment of a rivalry against Wolves that dates back to 1886, they remain in ninth, six points behind Everton in sixth.
Newcastle welcome Villa to St. James’ Park in what will be the first top-flight fixture of the weekend, with the Magpies seeking three points which would put further distance between them and the bottom three. Steve Bruce’s side sit just a point clear of Brighton and Fulham, albeit with a game in hand, after some poor results of late. In contrast, Fulham have picked up a number of eye-catching victories and their win at Liverpool on Sunday saw Newcastle’s relegation odds slashed.
Sunday proved that in this system United are toothless without their three main weapons. A rethink is needed. With Almiron and Wilson out, Allan Saint-Maximin is also absent medium-term, Newcastle just don’t have like-for-like replacements in their squad. Split strikers need to be shelved and saved for future reference. Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle could be brought back into the fold, somehow. United need goals, a possible threat, and a lowering of the white flag. Trying something, anything, might just aid their cause.
On the other hand, Villa lock horns with former boss Steve Bruce at St James’ Park on Friday aiming to return to winning ways after the goalless Midlands derby against Wolves at the Villa Park, a result which leaves the Villans in ninth in the standings in the Premier League. European qualification is still on the cards for Smith’s side, who are seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with a game in hand over Thomas Tuchel’s men, and their success this season owes a lot to their solid defence as they are getting used to life without their talisman captain, Jack Grealish.
The Villa Park outfit have conceded just 27 goals in their 26 league outings, with centre-back pairing Tyrone Mings and Konsa playing a pivotal part in their impressive defensive record. Having that in mind, Villa could have been without the 23-year-old Englishman for several fixtures which doesn’t bode well for the last 10 games. Taking into consideration the dramatic improvement from last year, Villa fans have plenty to shout about. However, a growing concern at Villa Park is the side’s inability to salvage a result.

Newcastle meet Aston Villa having not previously suffered a defeat in their last 11 Premier League home games against Aston Villa (W6, D5) since April 2005. Also, Aston Villa are looking to complete their first league double over Newcastle since the 2004-05 campaign after a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture at Villa Park in January.
Newcastle have kept just one clean sheet at home in the Premier League this season, fewer than any other side and we expect Steve Bruce to worry about not losing the game first and foremost. It should be a cagey affair and the Bettingkick’s Newcastle vs Aston Villa prediction is: Under 2.5 goals
