NEWCASTLE VS CRYSTAL PALACE MATCH ANALYSIS
Prior to the last round, Newcastle hadn’t won a competitive match since a 2-1 win over West Brom in mid-December. They were on an eleven-game winless run (D2, L9) in all competitions and are coming into this game on the back of their 2-0 win at Everton at the weekend, which ended their run of four PL defeats on the trot. They are eight points from the relegation zone in 16th place and could do with another fine display here. As for the visitors, the Eagles were knocked out by Wolves (1-0) at the Moulinex from the FA Cup Round 3. That loss started the current three-game run without a win in the league (D1, L2) before they got their revenge for the FA Cup exit and defeated the Wolves 1-0 in the league on Saturday. They are 13th in the league and could finish closer to the top-half in the standings with a win here.
After having a rotten month and a half since they beat West Brom in the league, Newcastle have finally snapped their terrible losing streak. They had lost five consecutive away league games for the first time since October 2019 and were coming into the Everton match as obvious underdogs. Steve Bruce has also endured intense criticism from Newcastle's fan base as his team slipped towards the relegation zone.
However, after switching to a 4-4-2 diamond formation they secured their first win in 12 games, with Callum Wilson's superb double helping to beat Everton. There were signs of improvement in the second half of their midweek defeat by Leeds, too, but, with Miguel Almiron at the tip of the diamond and Wilson and Fraser further forward, this was Newcastle's best display for months.
Before the Man City game, Hodgson described Palace's situation - 23 points, 11 clear of the bottom three - as somewhat comfortable. However, after losing to Man City and West Ham next, they have now won just two of their last ten league outings. Hodgson will be concerned that his side have now failed to score in 10 of their past 14 away games in the Premier League, but they will take the three points from the Wolves game and hope to get back to Newcastle for the home defeat in the reverse fixture earlier.
Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze continued his excellent debut season in the Premier League and added to Wolves' troubles with the only goal at Selhurst Park. The £19.5m signing from QPR settled a poor game with a thumping finish, his third league goal since making the step up last summer. This was a timely win for Roy Hodgson's side, who had taken one point from their previous three league games, and Hodgson, who made six changes and left new signing Jean-Philippe Mateta on the bench, will hope his side can kick on after this.

Newcastle gleefully ended their longest Premier League (PL) winless run since May 2015, and their challenge now is to destroy another extensive unwanted streak, having now completed 29 PL fixtures without consecutive clean sheets. Whether the Magpies are capable of turning the corner now they got Saint-Maximin and Lascelles back from coronavirus problems, and Ryan Fraser from injury remains to be seen against Palace.
The Eagles have been stuck on 23 points or close to 23 points for a little while so it was good to move away from that total. They appear to be improving upon their own defensive woes, maintaining clean sheets in three of their last five PL matches after failing to do so in any of the 15 prior. Roy Hodgson has an upper hand on the touchline against the opposite number Steve Bruce (W4, D4, L2), and will look to widen the margin in victories on Tuesday.
