NEWCASTLE VS LEEDS MATCH ANALYSIS
The Magpies haven't won a competitive match since a 2-1 win over West Brom in mid-December. They are on a ten-game winless run (D2, L8) in all competitions and are coming into this game on the back of a comfortable 3-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates and a 2-0 loss at the Villa Park. They are seven points from safety in 16th place and could do with at least a point here. The visitors, on the other hand, head into this weekend after two identical 3-0 defeats in the league at Tottenham and the FA Cup Round 3 against League Two side Crawley and a 1-0 loss at home against Brighton. They are in 12th place in the league but risk moving further away from the top-half of the table if they don’t see off the Magpies on Tuesday.
Newcastle remain on the losing course. They were knocked out of the EFL Cup quarter-final at the hands of Championship side Brentford, lost to Arsenal in the Fa Cup, and lost four more league games after a gutsy draw against Liverpool has eased the pressure a bit. It has been a rotten month for Newcastle since they beat West Brom on December 12. Newcastle have now lost five consecutive away league games for the first time since October 2019 and must consolidate at home against Leeds.
Despite playing a more positive 5-3-2 formation, the visitors were undone by Villa on Saturday. Steve Bruce's side, who introduced Allan Saint-Maximin after a long coronavirus absence, had only shot on target in the fourth minute and never overly troubled a Villa team. The new formation brought some balance to the team, but it was another dismal night for Bruce, who has plenty to ponder as he attempts to stop a worrying slide towards the bottom three.
As for the visitors, they were left with another premature exit from the FA Cup after a disastrous performance in their clash against League Two outfit Crawley Town left the fans fuming on social media. They were further aggravated with another weak performance in the league against the seagulls at home. The Whites have been yet again made to pay for their expansive style, missed chances as well as defensive errors.
Leeds have had much better days than their loss to Brighton on January 16, but a big part of that was down to the Seagulls’ excellence. It was the first time Leeds had lost three successive games during Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure and bar Jack Harrison bending a shot wide of the post they created precious little. Leeds looked as if they were merely continuing where they left off against Crawley. Bielsa's side remain 12th in their first season back in the top flight, having taken 23 points from their opening 18 games.

The pressure on Steve Bruce grows heavier with this emphatic defeat to his former club. Newcastle have not won for 10 matches in all competitions and although they are seven points above 18th place, they are far from safe from relegation. Bruce’s position looks even more precarious. The debate about Bruce's formations have been rife on Tyneside and his position came under further discussion on Saturday after former Magpies manager Rafael Benitez left his job in China.
On the other hand, Leeds' new year hangover continues as they were expected to provide a strong reaction after an embarrassing FA Cup defeat at League Two side Crawley - but never got into their stride in an uninspiring display. Without suspended midfielder Kalvin Phillips they will again miss the energy at the heart of their team but must find the kind of attacking energy and tempo for which they have earned plaudits this season.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
