NEWCASTLE VS LEICESTER MATCH ANALYSIS
Newcastle are 14th in the standings with 19 points from 15 games this season and are without a win in their last five league fixtures (D2, L3). They come into the match against the third-placed Leicester on the back of a goalless home draw against the defending champions Liverpool and will look to take points from another top-four hopefuls. The visitors, on the other hand, have drawn two games on the trot on the road. They drew 2-2 at Old Trafford on Boxing Day and followed it with a 1-1 share of spoils against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in midweek.
Newcastle are winless in five and are really struggling for fresh legs at the moment. Jonjo Shelvey was on the bench against the Reds, while Ryan Fraser will miss this game with groin injuries, and both Lascelles and Saint-Maximin are still said to be feeling the effects of COVID-19 and could continue to miss the first-team action for the Magpies. EFL Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Championship side Brentford and the defeat at Man City increased the pressure on manager Steve Bruce, but the latest gutsy draw against Liverpool has eased it up a bit.
After Wednesday’s match Newcastle manager Steve Bruce was quick to acknowledge 30-year-old goalkeeper Darlow, whose string of second-half saves kept the league-leaders at bay. As expected they sat back and defended in numbers, having only 27% of possession in the opening 45 minutes. Newcastle gained their first point against Liverpool in the Premier League since October 2017, ending a run of five consecutive defeat, but more importantly, the draw takes Bruce's side to 14th, four points from the top half and eight points off the bottom three.
Leicester, on the other hand, dropped down in the PL standings after Everton's 1-0 win over Sheffield Utd on Boxing Day. Despite only earning a point in the Man Utd match, the Foxes were the happier of the two sides after trailing twice to United at home. The result has kept them above their opponents in the standings but after Foxes visited London that is no longer a case. The result, however, did ensure they remained in the top-four mix.
Against Palace, Leicester were on the front foot throughout the first 45 minutes. However, the hosts were much more combative after half-time, and took the lead when Wilfried Zaha finished superbly from Andros Townsend's cross, only for Harvey Barnes' second goal in as many games to rescue a point for the Foxes. Leicester, who made seven alterations to the team that drew with Man Utd last Saturday, registered 17 attempts but left boss Brendan Rodgers disappointed with his team's profligacy in south-east London.

Newcastle have lost seven of their last nine Premier League meetings with Leicester (W2), losing both against the Foxes in 2019-20 by an aggregate score of 0-8.
Steve Bruce has been criticised heavily for negative tactics but, although he opted for a back five and they certainly did their fair share of defending, his gameplan proved unexpectedly adventurous against the Reds. With five players out of the contention, It remains to be seen whether he will insist on the same formation against Leicester or revert to 4-4-2.
As for the Foxes, the demands of the festive schedule worked against Leicester, robbing them of a cutting edge. Careless in the attacking third, Leicester ended up playing against the clock, rushing the final pass and finishing rashly. A situation that required Rodgers to make seven changes to the side who drew with Man Utd felt deeply unsatisfactory, hammering home the absurdity of asking teams to play twice in the space of 48 hours.
