NEWCASTLE VS SOUTHAMPTON MATCH ANALYSIS
Newcastle spurned a 1-0 lead over Crystal Palace on Tuesday night and ended up losing 2-1. Prior to the previous round against Everton, Newcastle hadn’t won a competitive match since a 2-1 win over West Brom in mid-December. They were on an eleven-game winless run (D2, L9) in all competitions before the match at Goodison Park, but have now returned to losing ways, even though they remain in 16th, level with 17th-placed Burnley. As for Southampton, very few believed that the Saints could repeat their last season’s 9-0 thrashing at the hands of Leicester – this time around at Old Trafford, albeit with two men sent off. A run of one win in nine, including four successive defeats, has seen the visitors drop down to 12th on the back of another 9-0 humiliation.
After having a rotten month and a half since they beat West Brom in the league, Newcastle had finally snapped their terrible losing streak at Everton. They had lost five consecutive away league games coming into that match for the first time since October 2019 and Steve Bruce has endured intense criticism from Newcastle's fan base as his team slipped towards the relegation zone.
However, the fact that after switching to a 4-4-2 diamond formation, they secured their first win in 12 games, could not help them on Tuesday night. The Magpies had a handful of chances to add to the second-minute strike from Jonjo Shelvey, while Roy Hodgson's side made the most of their opportunities, turning the match around in a four-minute spell courtesy of goals from Jairo Riedewald and Gary Cahill. Despite the defeat to Palace, Steve Bruce insisted that the Magpies are now back on the right track.
Southampton, on the other hand, have now failed to score in six of their past eight Premier League games. The Saints couldn't have asked for better teams to face immediately after a 9-0 trouncing than this Newcastle but injuries and suspensions have decimated their squad. They had to name two goalkeepers on the bench against United just to fill their quota. With this defeat, visitors have now found themselves on the end of the two out of three biggest defeats in Premier League history.
As for the game itself, a red card for Saints' Alexandre Jankewitz after only two minutes triggered a complete collapse for the visitors, who were on the end of the same scoreline against Leicester at home in October 2019. Sadly, the Saints finished the game having conceded as many goals as they had men on the field courtesy of Jan Bednarek's more controversial sending off, while a couple of dubious VAR decisions went against Southampton to add to their woes.

Steve Bruce is having a rough time as Newcastle's manager and anything other than three points against a Southampton side that just got beat 9-0 would put more pressure on his shoulders. On the other hand, the Magpies have at least won their last three home games against Southampton.
There are some glimmers of hope if Southampton look hard enough - they have already overcome with flying colours such a test once before, following the Leicester debacle last season. They will also take solace in the fact that the Magpies have only won one of their last 13 across all competitions and are without a home win since December 12, losing each of their last three.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
