Newcastle host West Ham at the St. James’ Park (Newcastle) in the 1st round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks off at 2 pm (UK) on Sunday, August 15. Read our reasons for Newcastle vs West Ham prediction and betting tips.
MAGPIES AND HAMMERS CLASH ON OPENING DAY FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING
Newcastle and West Ham meet at St James’ Park on Sunday and an entertaining Premier League opener is on the cards. The Magpies finished 12th last season, pulling clear of the relegation zone, but barring the probable arrival of Joe Willock, the lack of transfer activity over the summer will have supporters worried. West Ham claimed sixth place to qualify for the Europa League group stage and will be looking to avenge last season’s defeat in this fixture, one of two in the league against Newcastle that arguably cost them a place in the Champions League.
CASE FOR NEWCASTLE’S DEFENCE LOOKS WEAK
After three straight bottom-half finishes and quiet summer, the hosts must improve in defence though, especially at St James’ Park, as fans make their long-awaited full return. Notably, Newcastle kept the fewest home clean sheets in the top-flight last season (2), and only relegated West Brom conceded more home goals (33). Their defence has not looked anywhere near as solid under Bruce as it did under former boss Rafael Benitez and the Magpies managed to keep only seven clean sheets altogether.
While they may struggle at the back, they do have some good attacking options. It was no coincidence that Newcastle’s upturn in form from April came at the same time that influential forward Allan Saint-Maximin returned from injury and the Frenchman, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson will again be crucial this term. Wilson was particularly impressive last season, scoring 12 times in just 26 league appearances. Also encouraging for Steve Bruce is the fact that the Magpies have a strong recent record against West Ham (W3, D1) in their last four meetings.
HAMMERS TO START STRONGLY
West Ham ended 2020/21 in sixth, closing a fine campaign with two straight wins that each saw them net three goals. Yet, some unwanted history could beckon as the ‘Hammers’ have lost their previous five top-flight season openers. Nevertheless, West Ham have enjoyed a positive pre-season, winning five and drawing two of their matches, and they lost only one of their last five away league games of the 2020-21 season.
After fighting off relegation the previous season, David Moyes did a remarkable job in guiding West Ham to sixth and securing a European spot. They will again seek to build around England midfielder Declan Rice and the forward running of Michail Antonio, but Jesse Lingard returned to Man Utd after an excellent loan spell. The Hammers appear to be gaining momentum ahead of Sunday’s clash and they will be confident of overcoming a Newcastle side who could face another relegation battle.

Since they returned to the Premier League in 2017/18, against no side have Newcastle registered more league wins than West Ham (5), completing a double over the Hammers last season. Newcastle also beat West Ham in their opening Premier League match last season, winning 2-0 at London Stadium. The Magpies did come out on top last September, but the Hammers regrouped superbly and enjoyed a fine campaign. The Toon Army will be back at St James’ Park for the opener, though, and can inspire their side to a win here.
However, the Magpies eight goals from set pieces last term, which is an area the Czech Republic midfielder Tomas Soucek and West Ham can exploit. That’s why the BettingKick’s Newcastle vs West Ham prediction is: both teams to score.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
